Don't know much about the plethora of Ella Fitzgerald recordings that are out there on the market, so I thought I'd turn to you guys for some recommendations. I already own the single CD of a Louis Armstrong and Ella compilation and I have a Live From Montreux from 1977 with Tommy Flanagan on vinyl. I'm looking to find some other good material. Two selections on the BMG club (no laughter please) that caught my eye were "Jazz 'Round Midnight" and "Something to Live For", but I know nothing about these albums. Anyone have any thoughts or opinions about which recordings/albums I should pursue next to expand my Ella horizons?
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Follow Ups:
...Folks here have already recommended them, but I think these albums deserve to be mentioned over and over again:"Pure Ella" (on Decca-GRP), duet with Ellis Larkins.
"Let No Man Write My Epitaph" (also known as "Intimate Ella), duet with Paul Smith.
"Clap Hands, Here Comes Charlie."
Enjoy!
which reflect the preferences of some of the folks below:Cole Porter Songbook - THE best of the songbook series
Clap Hands Here Comes Charlie - see if you can find the Classic
Records gold CD. It's unbelievable.
Pure Ella - recordings she made in the early 50s with just Ellis
Larkins accompanying here on piano. Be aware there are at least
2 separate recordings by this name, and they are not the same.
The recordings that she and Joe Pass made together in the late 70s/
early 80s. Just Ella and Joe. Phenomenal. There are 3 of them,
I think, and I cannot remember the title of the one which is
most obviously superior to the others. Check out WWW.ALLMUSIC.COM.Enjoy.
Great stuff here! Don't pass it up if you're looking for some good Ella.

Lots of Ella on the market. I would start with the Ellington Songbook (3 cd), the best of em, IMO. The Gershwin (4 cd) is also awesome. At the other end of the spectrum is the must-have, intimate Ella w/ just Larkins on piano: "Pure Ella" with lots of Gershwin also. For an overview, "Something To Live For" (2 cds) is decent, and worth picking up if you are just wanting a broad overview (it touches on 1935-1966). I also have "The 75th Birthday Celebration" and it is okay if bought on the cheap. Got several nice cuts from her work on Decca from '38 to '55.

“Mack the Knife (Ella in Berlin)” Verve MGV4041

I am glad this album is mentioned because there seemed to be a bit of emphasis here on well-recorded albums rather than on the music, not that "Clap Hands" is bad musically.I would also put in a vote for her recording with the Marty Paich Orchestra, but that too is an audiophile quality recording.

.. because i) to me female jazz singing is essentially Lady Day, and ii) I do not like scat singing.I certainly concur with the recommendation of the 40th birthday concert and I would add "The Intimate Ella" (on Verve). It is essentially a jazz Liederabend (Lied Concert): just Ella (slightly overmiked) and a piano. Great late night listening.
Ella sings Gershwin, Cole Porter, Duke Ellington, and on and on.If you like her a lot with Louis also get them doing Porgy and Bess together, on Verve.
Note that where these Verve issues change over to Stereo, it is strikingly easy to notice how absolute polarity affects the reproduction.
Simply terrific. I WILL be getting the others over time.

. . . might be the best ever. Close second: "Ella Fitzgerald Sings Songs from Let No Man Write My Epitaph." These are both small-group records. So many good ones! Cole Porter and Gershwin Songbooks, fer sure (try "Lady Be Good," a compilation from the Gershwin book).
The stuff with Nelson Riddle ("Ella Swings Softly" "Ella Swings Brightly") and the Gershwin book are big band arrangements, very cool.
No doubt you'll get a load of good recommendations here--go get started!

Agree abuout "Clap Hands, here comes Charlie", it is my favorite, Ella's singing of Round Midnight and You're my Thrill is unsurpassed IMHO. Also agree with "Let No Man Write My Epitaph", Ella singing lovely standards slow songs.
We'll the song that gets me on this CD (I use it for reference when auditioning) is 'Good Morning Heartache'.Thanks and a tip of the hat to Mike K. for recommending this years ago...
