Return to Planar Speaker Asylum
99.90.52.131
A pair of 1.7i speakers were listed locally at an attractive price, but the seller stated that one of the speakers had a buzz in it. Since the 1.7i's do not have wires, I knew it wasn't delamination.I posted questions on a FB Magnepan forum and a number of folks stated that the problem was not fixable in the field. They need to be returned to Magnepan for repair. Based on this I didn't pull the trigger. A few weeks passed and the seller was getting desperate and he contacted me and made me an offer I couldn't refuse.
He brought them to my home and we tested them and true to his word one speaker sounded great. The other one had a noticeable buzz coming from the top corner of the bass side of the speaker.
After he left I played some sine waves and at 40hz the speaker buzzed quite noticeably. If I pushed gently on the membrane in the top corner it would change the buzzing sound.
I carefully removed the side rails and sock and this is what I found;
You will notice the gap on the top left where the metal frame has shifted to the right about 1/2". It would appear the adhesive has let go.
To correct the issue I used clamps like this;
I resolved the issue with some help from my lovely long suffering bride.Pat found poster board while at Wally Mart and with painter's tape I affixed it to the frame, covering the Mylar. Once the poster board was in place I drilled my screw holes while Pat held a shop vac hose right next to the drill bit.
Then using black wood screws and some Titebond wood glue in the holes to keep them from backing out with the vibrations. I put 2 - 1/2" screws on the top of both sides and 1 - 1" screw at the first cross brace on each side.
I was then able to pull the sock back down, reattach the binding post plate, staple the sock back on and snap the aluminum rails back on. Looks just as good as new.
I ran some 40hz tests and the speaker has no slap, rattle or buzz and sounds just like its mate. I've played a few hours of music and everything sounds great.

hi, i got a pair of 1.7i and similar problem, crackling sound from the top left and right size edges ,
i need help fix the issue , but dont know where to starts , as i cant find any screws etc to remove the side plate or the socks
would be great if u please sene me some info disassembly if possible ?
thanks
What I did was;Take the feet off.
Lay the speaker on my dining room table.
Remove the aluminum pieces from the side slowly & carefully by prying them out starting at the bottom. Once I got a few inches pried out it seemed to pop off.
Using a small flat bladed screw driver and needle nose pliers I removed the staples on the bottom.
I removed the 4 screws from the plate with binding posts and left it hanging loose. When removing the sock slip it over this plate.
I was then able to pull the sock up but I left it attached at the top.
Once I affected the repair, I did everything in reverse to put it back together.
The only thing I would recommend is having a good staple gun for reattaching the sock. I found a standard spring action gun didn't put the staples in all the way.

Well done. :-))
Don't think I've seen that type of separation before. Good problem solving and handiwork!
