Return to Planar Speaker Asylum

A tale of two systems.I recently picked up a pair of ET LFT 8Bs. They were cosmetically challenged and wired incorrectly. I corrected the wiring (one woofer was wired out of phase). Some bad Laminate damage on both speaker woofer cabinets. I was able to clean that up. Some of the screws were incorrect and stripped screw holes. Bruce Thigpen supplied the proper screws and I fixed the holes and the speakers are now presentable.
During this time I was also able to commandeer a space in my home for a two channel listening area. It is ~19'x13'x9'. I have, using DIY techniques treated the space fairly well. The vibe is upscale man cave.
In this space I have included 3 sets of vintage electronics 2 transistor and one tube. The intention is to have a half way decent space to test speakers. The RT60 scores and spectogram graphs look quite good above 100hz. The room is not lively at all.
So I hooked up my ET LFT 8Bs to a Mac 2105 C26 combination in this space and have have tested them against a few other speakers (so far) including KEF 103/4, AV123 towers, Mirage OMNI 260 and in each case the 8Bs sound noticeably better. They all have decent soundstage (due to the room I believe) but the tone, scale and delicacy of the LFT 8Bs is head an shoulders above the others.
The source for the music in this room is a WiiM Pro connected optically to a SMSL SU-1 DAC. This is then fed via RCA into a remote controlled switch that allows me to choose which system to play.
So I am quite pleased with the results and spent quite a few hours chillin', groovin' or whatever word you care to use for listening to the system.
But I promised a tale of two systems.
In my living room (15'x25'x9') I have a multichannel system (Main System) I use for both HT and 2 channel listening. Over the years I have spent a fair amount of time & energy getting it to sound good.It is configured thusly; (I am only including what I use for two channel) I have not "treated" the living room, but I have made specific choices in furnishing and decorations which make the room a bit more lively but still tamed most of the reflections.
WiiM Pro connected optically to,
Marantz AV 7704 which is connected to,
2 Emotiva XPA-1 Gen 1 amps
3 sealed subwoofers along the rear wall (1x15" Rythmik Audio and two Dayton 10" Dayton Titanics driven by a Crown amp with DSP)
2 Magnepan 2.7 QRs, each with a daisy chained GR Research dual 12" OB subwoofer. So after I had been really enjoying my new 2 channel space I decided to see how it compared to my "Main system." I linked the two WiiM Pros so they were playing the same music simultaneously. I used a DB meter to level balance the systems. Then I started walking back & forth between the two systems. This is about 40 feet and due to the walls & doors one system can not be heard from the other room.
Initially I wasn't hearing much difference but as I did a few more trips what I discovered was, the living room had a tighter foundation in the bass region. The sounstage was bigger/more expansive. However the two channel room seemed more precise in the placement of the instruments in the sound stage.
At present I still prefer my main system, but not by much. My two channel space has an additional advantage in that it is isolated from the rest of the house and my wife can watch TV (in the family room) while I listen in my two channel room.
The reason I call this an unfair comparison in the title is that I spent a lot more time, energy and money on my main system.
I still have lots of playing around I can do like testing Maggies (I have 3 sets, 2.7, .7 and MMG) into the 2 channel space. I am in the process of building bigger subs to replace the 10" subs in the living room freeing them up for the 2 channel room. So I will keep myself entertained.
If anyone is in the South Florida area they are welcome to stop by and critique whatever I have operational at the time.

In all fairness, imaging is highly dependent on the room. Distance between the front wall and speakers, toe-in, amount of absorption and diffusion all play a role. A more absorptive room (lower Rt60) will give you more precise imaging, a less absorptive one more of a sense of space. Since they're both line source dipoles, I suspect the imaging will be much the same with either speaker, all things being equal. (There are some other factors such as distance between the acoustical center of the drivers.)
Hi aceinc and ABliss. I am in South Florida and would like converse with you both if your interested. I have owned the LFT8's for 12 years and I am interested in hearing some Maggies. Here is my email address aniwolfe@aol.com

Let me know when you have the .7s setup with the ETs for comparison.
I am also in South Florida with .7s and contemplated about the ETs before I went with Maggie's for the second time.
Allan
aceinc I sent you an email
I have the .7s in my 2 channel system if you want to compare them against the LFT 8Bs.
I will probably be moving them back to the living room system by Monday, as I use them there for surrounds.
At present I can hear differences but am not sure which I like better. Someone suggested I try my Adcom GFA 555 SII on the Maggies as they like more power.
Does a woofer get wired out of phase?
'A lie is halfway around the world before the truth gets its boots on'. -Mark Twain
Actually one of the woofers was wired out of phase. I "fixed" that.
I have moved them into the 2 channel space and have done some A/B testing. I need to try a few changes, like switching the electronics between the two and also swapping the positions. I also want to try tweeters in instead of out.
However, based on the testing I did last night, on about 50% of the material I listened to there was little to no difference. On about 5% of the tracks the .7s sounded better. on about 45% of the material the 8Bs sounded better.
this initial listening is to be taken with a grain of salt, see paragraph 1 above.
The .7s are attached to NAD gear, the 8Bs attached to Mac gear.
The .7s are closer together than the 8Bs.
The tweeters on the .7s are outside, on the 8Bs they are inside.
Each of these can have an impact on the sound. The differences I heard, I would classify the .7s as warmer and the 8Bs as more analytical.
Allan:
If I have the time I will move the .7s from the living room to the 2 channel room today or tomorrow. I will initially connect them to a NAD 100 watt PE amp. I may try them with other amps.
The stands have been replaced with stands of my own design. They are very different from all the commercial stands I have seen.
BTW I am in West Broward near I75 & Griffin.
Very interesting, I also designed and built my stands. I am in Miramar. Sounds like you have lots to experiment with.
Here is a picture of what I am playing with.
You beat me to posting about the same topic, though my ETs and Maggie 3.7i's are in the same room. Last month I bought a pair of LFT-8b"s from someone in South FL. One speaker workers fine, even with a collapsed woofer dome. The other speaker was damaged at each panel mounting hole on the bass cabinet. Looks like it was dropped and then hit from the back of the panel to pull the panel away from the bass cabinet. I ordered a new bass cabinet. Additionally, a new (B-stock) tweeter and midrange are on order. I spent $200.00 for the speakers and another $800.00 for the tweeter, midrange and stabilizing rods which fit under the bass cabinet. The cross-over needed work and that is repaired. I probably labored for five or six hours. Once the tweeter and midrange are replaced I'll compare the 8b's to the 3.7i's.
Equipment includes a Lyngdorf TDAI-1120 integated amp with Room Perfect room correction and an Audio Kinesis Swarm sub system with four subs and a separate amp. The TDAI-1120 also has crossover settings on the outputs so I can use a Magtech amp to drive the highs on each speaker. Watch for more once the 8b's are operational.
Rayd, You certainly have a lot of work to get these speakers in shape. I think you will be happy with the results. Will they be better than the 3.7s? Hard to know.
Did you work with Bruce and his staff? They were great when I told them about the issues I had.
BTW, one of my woofers had a pushed in dust cap. Using a shop vac, very carefully I was able to suck it back out. There is a slight discoloration on the dust cap, but it looks OK now.
When I have a chance I will move my .7s into the 2 channel system and compare them directly. I also want to move the 8Bs to run on the VTA M125 mono blocks.
I have Audyssey on the Marantz and the WiiM Pro has room correction as well. I turned them off on both systems as I was comparing the speakers. This is just my MO. I like to hear the natural sound because it should only get better with room correction.
I'd be interested in hearing the 3.7 vs 8b comparison.
