George, the 57's continue to amaze me too. You and I have both posted about this before, I know I do because I continue to be so enamored with them. I keep finding myself stuck in front of them. After this next song...
I had a friend that spent his entire career in audio, when I was first buying the 63's I asked him what he thought of Quads. "The sweetest sound I ever heard were 57's driven by a Marantz 8B." I should have listened.
Follow Ups:
I just took a look at your system components. Wow! I was amazed by the number of components you have and switch in and out. Cool. HK Citation II is a very highly-regarded amplifier.
I have had as many as four pairs of speakers at one time or another. I'd switch back and forth obsessing over their strengths and weaknesses. Maybe more than a little OCD!
I have an ARC SP-8 II preamplifier that is a wonderful-sounding preamp. I've started dabbling with Schiit components which I like a lot.
Yes, I'll likely continue to haunt this forum urging people to try out Quad ESLs. Nothing quite like that first listening experience. They continue to satisfy.
I took Sheldon Stokes advice and am currently listening to the 57's driven by Heathkit UA amplifiers with the low feedback setting. I agree with Sheldon about them being a great match for 57's. The amps are also inexpensive and very easy to upgrade the coupling caps, I'm using a mix of film and PIO's (there are only two in the circuit).
I'm currently perplexed about the 57's I had been using an electrometer to check the HV, and just purchased a fieldmeter and am finding an uneven charge on the panels. Which would match what I have read about the coating evaporating with time. The problem is that the speakers sound great. I have the film and coating having expected to find some panels arcing and was going to build a stretching jig. Now I'm reluctant to touch a panel that sounds so good. I think instead I'll check output of the panels and see if I can detect volume differences within each panel.
