'Still prefer my U790s'
Of course you do!
Comparing the original QUAD to the U790 is like comparing an E-type Jag to a modern Ferrari. Both are a blast to drive for sure but.......
Time marches on things do get better. But as Steven Stone said in his TAS review 'The first listen to a pair of old QUADs for most humans is like hearing live music compared to the poor imitations of music produced by every loudspeaker they'd ever heard before.'
Yep! The reason why after nearly 70 years since they were introduced they are still the center of attention people still want them. I was talking with Andrew Jones a few weeks ago and he told me they were the first good sounding loudspeaker he ever heard. He has owned them since college.
Follow Ups:
"The first listen to a pair of old QUADs for most humans is like hearing live music..."
was via JWC's Dayton-Wright XG-8s in the mid 70s. While not perfect, they imparted such a natural character I had never heard before. And they could crank!
The first electrostats I heard was a stacked pair of D-W XG-10 driven with a Mark Levinson ML-3. Impressive for sure but they did not have the impact on me that the original QUAD did several months later.
