Hi. Thanks for inquiring. No news yet since I am trying to get one of my brother in law to help get into it. Can't do it myself since I have limited use of my hands as a quadriplegic. Will make sure to let you know what it was.
Yes it could well "just" be a wire lifting off the mylar (due to the particular 3M glue that Magnepan used to use, failing with age).
But I think you will still need to take the sock off, to look closely at the mylar wiring. :-((

Could also be a broken wire or wire that's lifting from the mylar. Check on that before looking into magnet faults, the problem Andy describes -should- be an uncommon problem, but buzzing due to a lifted wire (or broken due to corrosion) is a very common problem with these speakers as they age.
