Unless there is something unique to my pair of 3.7i's, I disagree. It was definitely NOT a room-dependent or acoustic treatment thing in this case. I'm curious if you have a pair of 3.7i's. I have been told one of the differences in the 3.7i (as compared to 3.7 and all iterations before) is a felt strip placed behind the midrange section. This most likely is what causes the phenomenon, which is a positive thing. I also wonder how many 3.7i owners live with them set up tweeters in and don't know what they are missing.
It's the mid-placement, not the tweeters that make the difference.

One of the main changes for the 3.7 vs previous 3.x models is the QR midrange emits more high frequency power with a smoother and higher transition to the ribbon tweet. It can do this better being a light QR foil.
In particular it takes on more of the 2-3 kHz region where human ears & brain are very sensitive, so the midrange is more of a mid-tweet and the ribbon tweeter closer to a supertweeter.
So not surprised that it's the midrange that has the most perceptual influence in the 3.7
You can buy on Amazon felt covers for a piano keyboard.
They can be hung in front of or behind the tweets or mid-range - whatever you want to damp - to check the potential effect of adding resistors, or just to deduce which surface might be causing a problem.
Have always had the tweets out on 1.6 and 3.7i, for maximum sound stage width.
and listener preference, regardless of what the speaker is objectively doing output-wise. Tweeters inside might not suit you, but may perfectly suit any number of other folks.
