Return to Planar Speaker Asylum
71.105.46.216
Last year or so I had the dreaded Buzzing from one of my speakers, after research here and on the Net I took them apart and did what I could to fix them.At first it worked and I was happy, that happiness only lasted about 4 months until the buzzing came back. I tried to fix them myself 2 more times and each time what I did only lasted a few months. Anyone that has worked on their older Maggies fully understand that one of the biggest pain In the ass was taking all of the staples out! Anyway after seeing that another Member sent his in for work and was happy that they were repairing them I made a call and got A RA# and sent them Home. They were received last week and Mick called me today to tell me everything I wanted to hear,They will probably be shipped back in about 2 weeks. No More Buzzing Or Staples Or Acetone for me!
Follow Ups:
Well I heard from Mick at Magnepan this morning, and my speakers are finished and working perfectly again. He said that they should be shipping out by the end of the week, early Xmas gift for sure.
Well my speakers were delivered 9:30 this morning! I set them up,haven't listened yet, probably later this evening, busy day with the wife. They smell new! Lol. Room is still setup for movies, have to put the panels back up in front of the screen...multi purpose room lol.
Put the panels up,connected everything,so far so good! I'm noticing that something doesn't sound quite right,I assume everything needs to warm up,15 minutes later still not right, scratching my head. I go to check connections again and noticed that I forgot to remove the tweeter protection strips! Memory goes first they say lol, sounding right now!
Put the panels up and reconnected everything, and I'm listening, things sound good but something is not right :-/ I get up to check the connections everything is fine. It's been awhile,Tha. It hits me like a ton of bricks...I forgot to take off for tweeter protection strips, sounding great now! First thing to go is memory so I hear lol.
didn't realize this posted,I was using my phone normally I use my computer.
Yeah, they sound better without the tweeter protectors on :)
I've got one of mine apart with no sock and my wires look fantastic. 2007 is that date stamped on them (my, time flies, but yes that is when I bought them)
How old are your 3.6R's to have the wires delaminating?
I bought mine around 10 years ago from a friend of mine,I don't remember the original build date but they were built before the type of or gluing process was changed for the better. If you want you can contact Magnepan with the serial numbers and they will let you know if yours have the better glue or the older glue type. No delamination is a good thing for sure.
21 day turnaround is incredible! Seems like Magnepan has sorted out their issues.
Let us know how they look and sound once you get them back. They'll need to break-in all over again.
Yes can't wait to get them back.
Break-in is when they got new Mylar.
Yes that is true, it's been a good few years that they haven't sounded like they should without any buzzing or any other anomalies.
glad to hear you sent yours off to be repaired my Tympani 4a's are still there but I'm in no hurry I know when they come back they will be better then new i'm sure your 3.6's will have the same results!! Mick is a good guy and does a grat job helping us maggie owners... see ya later

Have you heard anything new from Mick? Mine are finished and should be shipping out the end of the week.
Yes I'm not in a rush. When there ready cool. I have 1.7i's I use while I'm waiting.
to have this done?
Life is hard. It's harder when you're stupid.
and probably other items but for about 900 the MG-IIIa could be rebuild. I think adding the tweeters was extra about 200.
That was a number of years ago. Things have changed.
The Ribbon tweeters are good, the Mylar has no tears or issues, so basically a rewire of the Bass,Midrange and Tweeter panels, new Underbags and new cloth. Either way including shipping still Much cheaper than a pr. of 3.7i's or a used pr of 3.6r's which don't show up for sale like they used to. Since I really like the 3.6r's this saves me a lot of money that I can now start looking at a good External Xover to replace the boxes. Mick checked the serial numbers of my speakers and these were made before they changed the gluing process these were long past do to be refurbished.
I won't post the prices because it's different depending on what you're getting done,They give you a choice after going over the speaker as to what is needed and whats optional that may not effect sound quality. I shipped Via UPS,the cost to back I don't know yet. Cost me $300 to ship there from Long Island NY. Definitely worth it to me,Cheaper than a pr of 3.7i that is the same size but without crossover options. Even though I'm retired and have time to work on the speakers myself my back says no and I don't have a Heated garage so the fumes from the acetone from my basement creeping into the rest of the house is totally unacceptable.
That's great news! Happy for you man!
Thank You,cant wait for them to be back in my basement. I have a pr of 1.7i's that I use also but with them I use a sub,I like the sound of the 3.6r without subs better.
