high current being the key; even more so than wattage IMO.The emotiva UPA-1's are 80 lb rocket boosters.
bi-amping is the other key; I use a Marchand XM44 crossover which dedicates all the energy of the Emotiva's into the bass panel(s). I can control how much energy is pushed out through the gain control on the XO.

The Emotiva UPA-1's are the "petite" monoblocks - only 350W/ch and about 30 lbs/ea. You are probably thinking of the XPA-1 the 1KW amp at a nice 80 lbs. I Have the UPA-1's powering my ancient MGI imp great combo, the detailed, slightly brighter sound of the Emo's really wake up the mellow old Magneplanars.
Yeah you're right, I have both -the UPA-1's and the XPA-1's; haven't used either in months. I probably end up selling them in the next few months.
being able to easily adjust the bass/MT balance for different rooms and listening tastes.
