Return to Planar Speaker Asylum

Just talked to a Magnepan dealer, who informed me that Magnepan is not
currently accepting any new orders for product. According to dealer, the
problem is lack of component parts. I don't know the truth of any of this,
just passing on what dealer told me.

Follow Ups:
I recently ordered a pair of 3.7i's. The dealer said they were not taking orders for any other model due to a shortage of the particular 3M adhesive used.
Spray adhesives including 3M and Gorilla Glue have been out of stock for a long time in the various big box stores.
I searched high and low for stock months ago to glue some broadband absorber covers and none were to be found. The stores had no idea when they would be restocked.
how much of that stuff do you use Timmy?
why?
Tell me again, what planar speakers DO YOU OWN or HAVE EVER OWNED ???
Do you even know what a broadband absorber is or do you own any ???
What constructive contributions have you ever made to the PA or AA ???
And the vapid tripe poster of the year award goes to ...

Household appliances are in short supply and on back order. We have been looking for a new fridge and many are not in stock, some on back order estimated coming in the end of December.
Warranty service on new appliances is also a nightmare due to lack of repair parts supplies.
And 5 hours of time for me and a friend to tear down the inner and outer tub and motor to replace the bearings and seals and new driveshaft.
Thank God for Youtube.

You are lucky you could still source parts for it.
There have been multiple times where I wanted to repair an appliance and the parts were either no longer available or were too insanely expensive to justify the repair. That being said, I have been able to source parts and make repairs a few times before they went out of stock.
Yeah, it's either a widely used system in common to most of their Whirlpool and Maytag washers or they all leak regularly. What's interesting is that Amazon had several aftermarket kits complete with the bearing tool that you need to do the repair properly. The OEM part was over $250 and I'd have had to buy the tool for another $120.
On the other hand, our Thermador stove needed new hinges as they'd gotten sprung, so it didn't close tightly and wouldn't maintain heat well. Impossible to get anywhere!
I believe it was about 15 years old. Luckily, I finally found someone on ePay that wanted $400 for a pair plus shipping. I guess I saved $6K as that's what a 36", 6 burner stove would have cost for a new Thermador. I like the one we have. Simple knobs. No LED panel, no smart controls. It just works and has a really handy extra low simmer burner.

Our gas in-wall double oven went out and nobody makes gas in-wall double ovens any more.
I think I will be turning the recess into a wall cabinet and replace the cooktop with a slide-in range.
I hear you, I've had a stove on order for over a month with no clear date in site.
Refrigerator died recently, best option was a 2-3 month wait....got lucky and found one locally with only a 2 week wait.
Ours died last August. We couldn't get a new one until late December, and then had slim pickins'. Had no trouble getting a dishwasher and a range though.
Our HVAC service guy told me he has been waiting on everything from parts to complete systems for months. The outside unit needs a fan motor, its been on backorder for two months now. Fingers crossed. There are various reasons for this...supply chain back ups, and the increased use of multiple chips controlling functions now, I reckon.
We are looking at having a new split system installed. Made it through the Summer, hopefully by Spring things will be "normal". Heater works, never had A/C...I don't think I can go one more Summer without!
NO AC!!!! man you must be a tough cookie...here in Tennessee, even at a bit of elevation humidity and heat makes AC an absolute necessity. Good luck with your upgrade. Dont know where you are, but if the relative humidity is like ours (90%+ in the summer) your house would certainly benefit from a big dehumidifier in the HVAC system.
California. No humidity. I lived in Knoxville for a bit and just couldn't stand the humidity. Unless you are born into it I don't think you can adjust. I also lived in MN, and had no trouble with the cold, it was the summer humidity that did me in.
It's just getting hotter here now, used to be a few 90 days, now we're up into the 100's and even here it doesn't cool off enough over night to get the house cool. And running tubes doesn't help!
When buying household appliances, do not buy Samsung or LG. If you want
to know why, check with your local appliance repair service people.

I had a repair guy say the same about Samsung and LG. basically, he said the way they are designed creates so much labor for the repair - that it makes no sense to repair them. Unless you want to pour money into an older unit. The guy was willing to pass on a 600 dollar repair - on something he said would prob fail again in 2-5 years. He gets up and says - go buy a new one.
Our LG refrigerator lasted 3.90 years, just within the 4.0 year limited extended warranty period (per court order). That we lucked out on.I have to admit, they had the best ergonomics of all the refrigerators for our situation.
Microwave has same good ergonomics and I'm hoping for that magical 10 years which even all our Panasonics had given out on, as if on cue.
Washer, too, is LG. What a great design! I'll be real lucky if I get 10 years out of that, considering LG's track record.
Even our Breville toaster oven is acting up! That is planned obsolescence for you.

But does it play the Bach French Suites?
Our LG washer died at 5. Well, it could have been repaired for $700. The "10 year warranty" was not applicable to the part that failed, of course.
a lot of these are made like crap, are there any brands that might be more reliable? I've been looking at those with less features also - the less fancy the better. I don't need to talk to my fridge.
TIA
I've had one on all three homes I owned. For 1/2 the cost of a new refrigerator it covers electrical, plumbing, and all appliances including window and whole house AC/Heaters.
I had a microwave with it's display window slowly going out; they offered me a replacement or $1,200 cash. I chose the replacement since it was a built in wall unit.
My refrigerator went down, they got it back up although it took a few days. Another time the ice maker went out they got it back running.
Even covers my garage door opener (motor not tracks).
Ditto for my dishwasher which wouldn't start, they determined the wiring harness was obsolete and installed a brand new one.
Every plumbing issue I had was always resolved. Even when my pool pump went out.
Each visit is a $60 deductible; if it can't be fixed it'll be replaced with a comparable unit, no questions asked.

they're expensive but maybe worthwhile. I have a dishwasher
Hard to find things without all the features. We got a no frills Maytag SxS without an ice maker (nothing but trouble, and our water even filtered is AWFUL!). It was $1200 and has been pretty flawless. Huge, much bigger than our old Kitchenaid. Not as well built, but that's the way it is now. Won't last the 20 years the KA did. Eventually this one will move into the garage as overflow. Was looking at Bosch and Fisher Paykel, but they were nowhere to be found.
Bosch dishwasher that came with the house was ok until it wouldn't fill. I fixed it with a new valve, but then it broke again and needed a new pump. It was also a pain to clean out the wash wands. I had to pull them and clean the top shelf ones every few months or the glasses wouldn't get staved and not get clean. It was about 12 years old.
We replaced it with a Kitchen Aid quiet model which knock on wood, has been good thus far.
We had an old Kemore washer and dryer for maybe 25 years and finally decided to get new ones after fixing the dry once or twice when the washer broke. We bought Fisher Paykel and were fairy happy with them except for the plastic case and lid (which got cracked). I think they were about 10 years old when the washer wouldn't drain. We bought the Maytag washer and still have the Fisher Paykel dryer. It's worked just fine and is about 16 years old.

I had a Maytag washer. The bleach ate through it and we had quite a flood on the floor below. Repairman took a look at it and said it was history and that they don't make washers the way they used to!
Maytag was bought out by Whirlpool.
The Maytag & Whirlpool SxS's without the ice maker/water dispenser look virtually identical.
One of those 2 were in our consideration because we want food capacity over headache features that constantly break.
The repair guy who pronounced our Whirlpool fridge dead was adament about NO Samsung or LG...constant problems and no parts availability. OTOH I just bought a Samsung 50" tv....so far so good.
My entire kitchen is (now somewhat older) Samsung. The dishwasher gave up the ghost after a number of years, but they do that. It probably lasted 5 years, the new one 5 years so far. Wife's sisters Bosch units lasted far less time. The heavily used 10 year old microwave handle broke off, I fixed it with some epoxy (not visible). Otherwise all bullet proof for around 10 years.
What do you know that I don't? I can't bother calling a repairman when I don't need one... :)
Our current house came with a base model Whirlpool dishwasher. It lasted 22 years. It was still going strong except for the cosmetics when we replaced it. It had a huge metal motor and heater compared to the new $1,500 KitchenAid which has a plastic motor smaller than my fist and virtually no heater. In order to make EnergyStar specs, the KitchenAid requires the water heater to do the heating work, else it goes stuck in an error code hang because the water is too cold.
We are also still using a Sears Kenmore countertop microwave on a daily basis that is over 30 years old.
I doubt any currently made appliances will match those longevities.
We have a KitchenAid dishwasher that's at least 30 years old. It just won't die. If you look at repair forums, those things are legendary. It does a better job of cleaning dishes than the newer dishwashers, as well.
I called yesterday. Apparently they're too busy to answer or return a call. I don't mind waiting, I just want to make sure my order is in and to see if there is at least an idea of when they might ship.
But I'm comparing apples to apples, new models only. The people I know who use their dishwasher a lot (we're 8-10 x a week) maybe last 5 years, no matter what brand.
Supply chain problems abound. Part of the problem is erratic demand - during COVID demand for some things fell, other things soared.... and workers were scarce on the ground to produce, ship or handle stuff. Now, demand is rising but production is not rising as fast, and shipping is sorely lagging. One problem is lack of workers. This has happened partly due to demographics - the number of young folk entering the workplace is down. And then too the last four years saw a steep decline in new immigrants. You also have a situation where corporations don't want to increase pay to attract skill, and won't train the unskilled to fill jobs.
In Chicago I'm seeing many companies offer more than the $15 an hour minimum wage for low-skill entry level jobs; and for example McDonald's is offering unheard of benefits to attract new help.
Pay is being forced to rise steeply in some professions - a friend of mine gave up his law practice to drive a truck because he makes much more money.

Just saw a news report where McDonalds was offering over $20/hr starting pay to attract, "Do you want fries with that" ???
I take my hat off to ALL at Magnepan who stood and fought the battle overcoming the odds these past 20 months.
They fought until they could fight no more.
Shortages of all types... scary
Actually Chinese. Good luck to Magnepan, hopefully they survive.
They're very stubborn about making everything here.
I've been waiting 16 weeks now for a pair of MC1s.
they seem to be affecting everything. My wife just brought home another case of TP just in case.
