Return to Planar Speaker Asylum
108.46.63.79
I just watched the video with Steve Guttenberg discussing the 30.7 Condo Prototypes. They didn't have any socks on them at all. So this got me to thinking-as I've done before once or twice in my life-how would Maggies sound without their socks on. Is anybody listening to their Maggies without that likes the sound better than with? I know they wouldn't have the WAF,but mine are in my basement so no issues about what my speakers look like. P.S. I'm not Talking about keeping your Toes warm.
Follow Ups:
"...try to do that in a living room with the wife lurking around!"
So send her off into the basement to lurk around down there.
Gender discrimination? It seems to husbands, but no wives, are often in the basement. Shouldn't there be an equal number of woman caves? SWMBO?
Talking about a Woman Cave, ever since my wife saw that damm insurance commercial about the ladies "She Shed" getting hit by lightening and burning down, she looks at sheds online and wants one built in the backyard for her and her girlfriends. I keep telling her that the Code Enforcement people won't permit it Lol.
for a while I had 2.7's and they had 2 socks from what I remember, so I eliminated one. AFAIC it's better.
I did it to my Quad 57's and replaced the grills with one layer of regular cloth. Grand improvement to the tippy top end.
'how do you like Socialism so far?...'
The glorious sound of sockless maggies!!!!
Mine are in my cave room. Heck, I do not even have to dust them as my wife never sets foot in this room. I can do whatever I want.
Sensational! :-))
And you have them reversed (as I do) - so you listen to the mylar side and the "no bars" side of the ribbons.
Andy
Andy, this is the normal way for the 3.6, Mylar in front.

Very respectable set up @shumi!
Looks good to me, mine are in my basement room also, wife hasn't been down there since I moved the system down there so she could have her living room back lol.

Are those Danny's speaker cables ?
How do you like them ?
Yes Danny's DYI speaker cables. More detailed, wider soundstage, lower noise level than the Audio Art Cables they replaced.
Front....gives me a chance to also monitor panel for delamination, wrinkles, etc...
Shumi, I am still surprised that these were refurbished by Magnepan. The finish is very much DIY.
Hi Roger,
yes they were refurbished at the factory. Not sure why you are not happy with them. Mylard is nice and tight, no wrinkles except for one very small on the very top of my left speaker which does not come into play... and I measured them to be within 0.5 db of each other, and of course they sound amazing.
Well, is the wiring really straight and well layed? The adhesive seems to be unevenly spread out.
Here is Magnepan's development/voicing room in their factory.
Must be something to it if the factory does it. I'm really thinking about doing it.
Go for it!!! Notice my custom modes to my listening chair to ensure perfect alignment with sweet spot in the vertical axis....try to do that in a living room with the wife lurking around!
Lol Nice Chair! I'll probably try do it in a few days,I have new tubes for my preamp coming today and I want to deal with that for a few days first.
skypop, not sure if we talked about this in previous posts, but if you already do not have it, I recommend you get yourself a usb mic and a mic stand in order to use rew to measure and optimize your system.
I had one years ago when I was setting up my home theater than sold it after I was finished. So I already have a boom mic stand just need to pick up another mic. I put the new tubes in my preamp yesterday and letting them play for the whole wknd,so during the week I'll have a better idea if I'm going to take the socks off.
The LRS is in a new room, so two new variables, but I did that wit my mg 12's and I thought I got a bit more presence and immediacy, but on hindsight just having the socks on made such a small diff for me, the blank look of my LRS's just means I'm not distracted.
I wouldn't do it again.
TBH, an aftermarket kit to easily swap socks would be interesting. Probably would require the factory setup would have to be rethought out for that. They just staple the fuck of of anything. The woods around the factory is like an Art Brut installation.

Here Ya go. https://youtu.be/AzPBz3SOT4A
And not very good ones. No WAF here, but I prefer the socks!
Just wondering from a sonic standpoint.
