Return to Planar Speaker Asylum

After several years of gathering equipment, living in hotels while working assignments from Hamburg Germany to Xi'an China and Rockford, IL (which has the dubious distinction of making Dayton, OH look good) I finally have a place of my own to put it all together.
I still need to build a table for the turntable and setup the motor controller which is rather complex, make some cables and do\get a few other things but I have digital input and very nice output!
Follow Ups:
Incredible. I always recommend to people before they are locked into a setup that it's best to put your turntable on a wall shelf attached to a stud. Wonderful sound without any tweaks necessary. Just thought I'd mention it.
pounds and I don't think that included the power supply.
He built the table from a sheet of aluminum and other parts. It is something. I hope he puts the wrap on it.
Steve, may I ask: what is the width of your room?
The listening room is (correction) 17' wide, 24' long. The ceiling at the wall behind the speakers is 13' high and rises to 18' in 15'. The remainder of the ceiling is 18' high.

It's nice seeing a system that isn't relegated to some basement, but that fireplace and all the window glass plus sky light (UV resistant glue or not)?
I haven't posted here in a while, but I read and learn a lot. However, your post yesterday regarding COVID was insensitive. As an American Born Chinese and an emergency physician for 20 + years, I am disappointed.

beautiful! and Dayton's where I grew up : )
I remember seeing Tymphani's over at Audio Etc (still around) growing up back in the 70s!
@Green Lantern
Thank you.
I will have to check out Audio Etc.
EDIT: Aah, I read that you have T-IVas!I'm curious to know the reason(s) why you separated the mid/tweeter panel from the bass panels?
And what stands are you using to hold up the panels (as you're not using the stock 'T-feet')?
Thanks,
Andy

I'm curious to know the reason(s) why you separated the mid/tweeter panel from the bass panels?
For one reason, Magnepan's owner's manual separates them, but I don't (and apparently neither does Cardas.)
That's interesting to know - thanks, Norman.
My view also is that adjacent drivers should be next to each other - not separated. But perhaps the wavelength in the XO region is so large - relative to the gap shown in the pic - that the gap is irrelevant?
Andy
Hi Andy,
This maybe of some reference.

Interesting chart. Thanks for posting it.
.
Probably the same reason the 30.7's, 30.7 for Condos and Andy's Frankenpans do the same thing.
Not really, mate.
Sure, I have separate frames for the bass panel, and the mid panel & ribbon - but I butt the bass frame right up against the mid/ribbon panel (with an 1/8" gap to stop bass vibrations from getting into the mid/ribbon panel).
I don't have a large gap like that shown in the pic.
Andy
Hi Andy,This is one of the reasons I was referring to, isolating the bass from distorting the mid/tweet.
"... with an 1/8" gap to stop bass vibrations from getting into the mid/ribbon panel ..."
Others reasons are the ability to physically time align drivers and move the bass driver out of room nodes. Ever notice that the 30.7's are never aligned in a straight row (except maybe for some photo ops)?

best response with the front wall reflection included may mead that the woofer panels are not in the same front to back plane as the mid/tweet panel. Ideally setting these up is worth the work and where they end up sounding best might not be the best for pictures.
Now that you come to mention this ... :-))
Andy
@andyr
They are Tympani IVa's.
They are on Magnepan factory feet.
Unfortunately I cannot claim the innovation of separating the mid\tweeter panel from the bass and mid bass panels.
@aneumayr
Thank you!
Yes, I am in Dayton. You will have to come up and have a listen,
@G Squared
Thank you!
@skypop
Thank you!
I have not made any repairs. The left tweeter is a bit tired. I will avail myself of the factory program and swap them out for new ones.
@emailtim
Thank you sir!
Rockford LOL
@grantv
Thank you sir!
Yes! I would love to hear the IV's.
Aah, OK (I thought I should be able to see them poking out in front of the panels!).Can I suggest some braced Mye stands (at least, on the bass panels) would deliver a serious upgrade in SQ!
Re. ' avail myself of the factory program and swap them out for new ones ', it would be worth asking them first whether they:
1. install the 'old' ribbon material (ie. the same as you have) in your ribbon cases?
2. or, simply give you new (3 ohm) ribbons as a swap for yours?
If #2 then:
* the ribbon cages will be 3/4" longer than before - which might give you an installation problem! :-)) (I just made this swap.)
* a value of 3 ohms instead of 2 ohms will change the effect of the HP filter on the ribbons. (It will bring the roll-off frequency a bit lower.)

Long term I will replace the mids with B&G RD75's which will require a different panel and I will make new frames for the bass and mid bass.
That should sound really good! :-)
I presume you'll put an RD75 and a ribbon in the one (rectangular) frame?
Andy
I may first cut a slot for the tweeter in the 'wings' I have and see how that goes.
Sounds good - when you do this ... just make sure of 2 things:
1. arrange the rebate for the ribbon cage (on the front or the back, whichever you choose) so that the ribbon is in the same plane as the RD75's ribbon.
2. but the cage flanges up against the side of the RD75 ... to get them as close together as possible.
Andy
@andyr Thank you!
I appreciate help integrating the RD75's.
What is the frequency range of the RD75's ?
I am experimenting with GRS NEO8s, but need to buy more to extend the arrays and hopefully extend the low end.
It was not easy to find them.
160 or so to 12,000 + Hz looks pretty good although there is supposed to be a peak around 5 k. I have a schematic for a notch filter for that.
That looks like it is going to make a stellar midrange.
I wish I could find some RD75s myself! :-(( (To replace my T-IVa mid panels.)
Andy
Awesome! Are you in Dayton? I'm in Cincinnati...Anderson area.

Gsquared
Congrats! Do you have to do any repairs to the Tympani's?
The socks could use a bit of a nip/tuck and a wash but the drivers are all good right now. I didn't hear any delam in the year I had them set up. I did notice the ribbons, one was taut and one was a bit loose but they are consecutive serial numbered drivers. It was mentioned that he would eventually spring for a new pair. But he does at least get a chance to enjoy these for a time and get used to them as he plans his next steps.
It has been fun watching him collect gear for this rig. His TT is something, a portable 120-pound unit that takes two or one very determined person to set up. Many main rigs have fewer components than his power supply!!!
You can listen to music naked with those blinds
Congratulations on the new digs and equipment. I hope you enjoy them both.
Ditto on your Rockford comment from first hand experience 3 decades ago. It appears Rockford hasn't improved with age.
And a sublime looking setup so far!
