Return to Planar Speaker Asylum
98.249.230.129
I currently have a pair of MMGs. Each one sits on top of an OB Servo sub. The setup sounds quite nice.
I have searched and have not found an objective (not even a subjective) comparison of the LRS vs the MMG side by side. If there are any out there, please point me to them.
I have built custom bases of my own design and installed an 80hz High pass filter and drive the each side (sub/MMG) from the output of an Emotiva XPA 1 Gen 1.
My questions are;
Would I notice much of a difference between the MMGs & LRSs?
Should I step up to used 1.7i or 2.7? The 1.7i are within a year old and ~$1,400USD, The 2.7 are ~20 years old and ~$850USD?
Is there somewhere to get a pair of LRSs without the excessive wait?
Is the Magnepan 3 year warranty transferrable?
Follow Ups:
Sorry the 1.7 with its planar technology is a better speaker than the 2.7 which is 20 years old no matter how you cut it..$1400 is a bargain on a 1 year old speaker.
I have the EMOTIVA amps with the 1.7-nice dynamic fit. even without subs suggests a deeper bass than the numbers. But Magnepan and refit the 3.7 for the price diff I would go in that direction.Either way you will be doing well. The 1l7 can play the shit out of a lot music-and I use low priced Mgami cables.
There's currently a couple of pairs on the Canadian audiomart both going for over $1,000.
I just sold mine yesterday to a guy who drove down from L.A. to San Diego to grab them. I listed them for $750 but I let them go for $650, the cost for a new pair.
They don't last long on line, I knew when I bought them I'd eventually get what I paid for them due to the popularity and long waiting period. COVID only made the wait this much longer I'm sure.
Magnepan is calling the LRS a 'ribbon' speaker vs the MMG's which are 'quasi-ribbons'. Obviously whenever the technology differs the outcomes will be different, in this case it's apparent the outcome is on the up curve as far as popularity.
The MMG is not a bad speaker in and of itself, problem is if you choose such you'll FOREVER be pondering the "what if I hadda.." question.
If you can get a pair of 1.7i for $1400, grab them.
The LRS is far superior to the MMG imho.

Mike, have you had an opportunity to hear both?
How would you describe the differences?
I owned MMGs when they first came out, but sold them long ago. Got my LRS
in June, I think, and they are wonderful. Green Lantern's post accurately
describes the differences.

I owned both at the same time although my MMGs were heavily modified (google Magnestand).I can say the LRS are lighter, crisper and a tad bit easier on amp selection than the traditional MMGs (but not by much). I think they would respond better with Class D amps than an MMG.
The MMG (at least mine) has far better (even superior bass) -if pushed properly.
My intent when I bought the LRS was simply to see what all the hoopla was about. When I went to audition them at my local dealer I bought them on the spot. They were being pushed by a pair of 100 watt (tube) amps and simply blew me away.
They're extremely listenable, quick (almost stat speed) and less temperamental than the quasi-ribbon line IMO, meaning they adjust well with whatever you to choose to throw at them. Obviously the better the equipment, the better the outcome, however I'm sure with the surge in popularity they brought, I can see college kids running theirs with receivers and turntables. In fact the kid I sold mine to was in his early 20s but he said he's got a Parasound amp at home he was using to push LS50's.

He touts LS50, Parasound and has discovered the LRS. Nice.

I auditioned a pair of MMG a few years ago. I kept my LRS. Different speakers.

Few listeners, if any are going to buy a used MMG over a new LRS regardless of how they think they sound, unless cost and immediate availability is a factor.
However the LRS may require a more costly, versatile (and better sounding?) amplifier in order to 'shine'.
