I would suggest that is the case for any Maggie. :-))
You also said: "But when adding a subwoofer it is logical to believe that you would be able to cut the general volume of the speaker ."
That is certainly not logical to me. If you 'do it' right ... all the subs do is extend the lower frequencies that your 1.6s seem to produce. (Whether you do this by bringing the subs in, very low (and merely augmenting the Maggies) ... or bringing them in higher & rolling off the Maggies. This is what I do.)
Thanks Andy. When using a sub woofer one should only match the the lowest cross over point(40) on the 1.7(to the Rhythmic f12 g) was my plan. I live in a NYC apt ) and was hoping to reduce general volume by getting a 'deeper bass definition' and in a way fool my ears for my neighbors sake. Is that possible?
Sorry, don't know, mate. :-((
But your 1.7s (or any spkr for that matter) don't just stop producing sound below the their 'cut-off' point - that's merely the frequency where the sound level is 3dB lower than it was, say, at 3x the cutoff frequency. At frequencies below the cut-off point ... the output simply gets less.
So if you were turning up your 1.7s, in order to be able to hear 40hz well then all that will happen - if you bring in your subs at a frequency which is the same as the 1.7's 'cut off' frequency (or less) - is that the subs will deliver those LFs, instead of the 1.7s.
Your neighbours will still hear them - depending on:
* how loud you listen at, and
* the construction of your apartment.
Thank you Andy....I live in a 1940's building with 10' ceilings but sound travels cement and oak floors-do not know if the 'trade off' is worth it since I play a lot organ music and if even the best sealed woofers are an asset.
The proper thing is the 20.7 but they weigh 175 pounds each- a little much at my Joe Biden age group.
Well, so do I! :-))
Rest assured, 30.7s will deliver organ music well but 20.7s still need subs to do ol' Johann Sebastian justice!
I lived with my IIIas - and later 'Frankenpans' - for over 20 years before I added a pair of sealed subs ... and realised what I had been missing out on, all those years.
