I suspect the popping noise is your amp clipping, the Maggies are fine.
The Emotiva's are a tremendous bang for the buck IMO.
They're powerful, high current and non-fatiguing; if you can find four mono amps that can do the same at a cheaper price - buy em'.

Nope - switched the speakers L/R and the problem moves with the speaker.
Nonetheless I might indulge in a pair of Emotiva mono-blocks!

As your speakers are that old and made before they changed to a different glue, I am not surprised the wire has come lose. If the wiring is still okey it can be reglued with the 3M 30NF waterbased glue. Remove the old glue with aceton first. If the wire is brittle i need to be replaced altogether. Magnepan can do it but it will not be cheap as it means shipping the speakers both ways. Magnepan sells kit for DIY, wire, wire and instructions. They will not ship the glue during the winter as it is waterbased.
