Well, there's the same issue in a church, listening to the organ there. Whether you hear ... or feel the 16/20hz tones is immaterial - you know they are going on!
Yes, my subs are sealed - ported subs are a nono, IMO (trying to squeeze a quart out of a pint pot!).
The REW sweeps I have done in my room (with the door closed) show -3dB at 16hz - which is sensational, IMO! And given the sub cones only seem to move 5 or 6mm, I don't think they are getting into 'distortion' mode. But then, I am not listening at 110dB. :-))

Follow Ups:
The way I set up the T IV panels for wall loading and with good bracing I get the tangential room mode so the bass peaks at 25-40hz. but there is still useful output down to 16hz and the 20hz output is still at midrange output levels. The integration of a sub would not really do that much for extension as much as it would enhance bottom octave output. With a 20.7 in line, a Tympani would have baffle and output coupling effects with the mains to get you better bass and likely no need for enhancement till you get to 25 hz, where output would falter a bit..
If money is no object (must be nice ;-), the Eminent Technology TRW-17 is the only true subwoofer. Flat response to DC!
