Are you applying the film with the dust cover frame removed from the speaker or while it is in the speaker? Trying to install new film while the frame is in the speaker is nearly impossible. The frame was designed to be easily removed from the speaker.
Heavier material is going to kill top end and resolution. It is a major degradation of performance.
If that does not matter then go to the hardware store and buy a window film kit.
The best compromise between ease of installation and performance would be 6 micron film available from ER Audio in Australia.
Good luck!
Follow Ups:
Thank-you, I just ordered some from ER, they seem like nice people.
6 micron will work nicely with little impact on performance.
The 6 micron Mylar that ER Audio sells has been tensilized. This makes heat shrinking just a little more difficult but it will still shrink down nicely.
