It's a 3 car garage and two are used within it but I'd have to buy or build a shed to store whats currently stored in it. My wife is a pack rat and rarely throws anything away. I have my share of boxes and footlockers full of stuff as well. I WAS going to buy a storage shed for her stuff but then I got to thinking; hmmm what happens when the shed gets full and other things start piling up....so I ditched that idea knowing it will wind up in the garage. Plus she collects clothing and other items for Burmese refugees that arrive in the community. I knew this going in so I can't say I blame her.Side note- funny thing is out here garages are often converted into studio apartments or even full size apartments and can demand anywhere from $600-$1300 month. That's not necessarily anything I'd want to do, I'm in no hurry to become a landlord in this economy.
Basements in California are rare. There's a common misconception that this is due to potential earthquakes; that isn't true; and unfortunately it's a shame since that would open up a lot room for HT and/or storage. Oh well, 1st world problems as usual...

Yep, I wouldn't be in a rush to rent a space out unless finances tell you to do so.
Basements here in older houses like mine are very common, but as most people don't like them, they only happen on new builds with sloped properties.
Getting extra storage would backfire for sure, not the best plan IMO. My mom was a pack rat, my dad the opposite. My wife and I are both purgers (with extra stuff, not bulimia). My FIL however takes the cake. He has 5 acres (plus the bottom right house with all the other junk on it where his son/my BIL lives). His house is on the left of the main property, the rest is a workshop, trailers.. all filled with "stuff". And he keeps buying stuff. In vehicles alone I think he has at least 6-7; 66 Tbird, 59 hardtop vert Galaxie, Eclipse vert, Crossfire vert, 2 pickups, dune buggy, sled, trike, forklift, trail bike... We'll need some serious help when he passes this misfortune on.
Tow trucks and dumpsters can get it down to manageable size pretty quick. My Dad was neat and organized but saved everything. I found the receipt for his 64 Chevy, you never know when you might need that even though it was sold in 67, lol.
Look at the scale. I agree, but the building in the middle is a very large 2-3 car garage. To the right is a lean-to about 20' wide x 30' deep (where storage starts to pile up), next to that are two 40' semi-truck trailers (stand beside one and think of the magnitude of this), then a 30' semi-truck trailer, all completely full of stuff/junk. Then all the old vehicles, etc. out in the yard, tires...
We're talking a LOT of stuff, a lot of trips, dump trucks, dumpsters.
I would find an old government or commercial building to turn into a living unit with a large room for my Maggie's.

Huge open space would be a great thing for Maggie's, never mind just "living".
