After talking with Bruce Thigpen, I found out the tweeters are somewhat "hotter" on later LFT-8b's. Even the "low" setting was too much for me, so I added an external resistor to lower it even further.
Some of the issue with the "forward" sound of the LFT-8's is actually the woofer. :) The cone resonance is not properly attenuated by the crossover network and is easily audible. I fashioned a decent/easy fix for this which I outlined here on the PA a while back.
I have other issues with the crossover as well. :)

It was a few months ago. A simple RC circuit added across the woofer terminals does the job effectively. You do have to pull the woofer loose from the front panel to perform the modification. You can't add it elsewhere.
If you'd like to experience the issue, simply run the woofer system by itself and perform a full range sweep test over five seconds or so. Be prepared to cover your ears when get into the 2khz range. :) The woofer shrieks audibly in this range.
