Return to Planar Speaker Asylum
76.103.248.230
Hi, first time planar owner here. Just received new MG12s and one of them isn't working correctly, but before I possibly make a fool of myself going back to the dealer and slap myself when I hear the easy solution, I thought I'd be better off making a fool of myself here!
The problem is that I'm not getting vocals or other upper end instruments out of my left speaker (yes the tweeter ribbons are on the outside).
I have a Niles 275 amp puts 110/channel into 4 ohms and though I've tried a few setups what I have going now is JRiver 17 from my laptop to a Audioengine DAC to my amp. I also tried playing music through VLC and another player just to make sure it wasn't a setting in JRiver, with no luck.
I checked all the connections and when that didn't help I took the left speaker cables and switched them with the right and the right kept on playing fine while the left still sounded poor. I switched the MG12s out with a pair of bookshelf speakers which both sounded fine.
I switched out the fuse with one of the extras that shipped with the speaker and I tightened those tiny screws to make sure the banana plugs were securely in place.
I've done everything I can think of except I haven't messed with is the tweeter/attenuator and resistors that come with the speakers. Has anyone here had a similar problem or know what might be going on other than the possibility that I just got a bum speaker with a bad quasi ribbon tweeter?
thanks, J

thanks, I probably won't try anything that might cause more of a problem however I should have updated my post. This morning I did more test using just the one speaker and it's now clear it's not the tweeter, the speaker as a whole is muted. I had only listened to the left by itself briefly yesterday but I had more time today and while the right speaker sounds fantastic on it's own, when I play the left one by itself it's sounds more like my neighbor is playing their stereo loud and I'm hearing it through the wall. Playing an older polk speaker or a mirage satellite speaker with the same cable sounds fine. Switched the cables again just to be sure and it's definitely a problem with the MG12.
What you're describing sounds an awful lot like the tweeter circuit is open and the tweeter isn't playing anything. That's the sound my 1.6s make if I unplug the tweeters.
I think it's unlikely the tweeter is bad on a brand new speaker. I'll betcha it's a wiring issue. Try removing the jumper and plugging in the amp to just the tweeter - you'll have to plug the positive end of the amp to the positive terminal and the negative lead to one of the jumper connections - one should make the woofer only play, the other will make the tweeter only play - caution! you'll bypass the fuse doing this according to tyu's schematic, so be careful with your volume and amp and don't tell magnepan you did this.
Can you let us know what you find.... pull tweeter/attenuator bar out...An put it back..goodluck
no luck with the attenuator bar. Even though I'd switched the cables and it didn't help I still stripped them and put on new banana plugs, tried turning the plugs and still no luck. Maybe the dealer can help, I'll give them a call this week. thanks
Just if you have not seen.....but dealer ASAP...new set MG12s if can get right..
thanks, I'll contact the dealer and see if they have any suggestions, but I'm 99% sure I'll need to bring it in/return it.
