HI, I just bought a beautiful pair of Maggies. But one panel seems to "flap" or rattle is more like it, as I increase the volume or at certain lower frequencies, especially with drums, tenor, bari or electric bass. What do I do? Vocals, strings and brass seem fine. Thanks,Chet

This is generally caused by one of two things:
1. the wires have become unstuck from the mylar (a common problem with older Maggies).
As kff has mentioned, there is lots of info on this site as to how to fix this. However, if it is widespread, it may be better to send them back to the factory for refurbishment. (Depends on how "handy" you are! :-)) )
2. one of the slightly convex reinforcing bars on the holey-metal sheet (the "pole piece") has become unstuck - so you have to refix it.
In either case, you really need to take the socks off and inpect the back & front of the driver, directly - so you can see what is going on.
Again, there is lots of information here about removing socks (removing lots of staples at the base of the panel).
Good luck,
Andy
Thanks guys. It's a rattle, sounds like my catalytic converter cover is about to fall off. At medium/high volumes in the lower frequencies. Sounds like the mylar comes loose with too much energy. Otherwise they sound fine. I guess it is just glue it back down!
I had IIB's before. I'm not sure it's the delamination that other people are talking about. They are talking about wires which lift up from the mylar. It may be a tuning dot is loose, or it could just be a SPL limitation on that speaker, at high enough amplitudes the bass mylar will hit the magnets and make that sound.
I had that too, I just assumed it was saying "turn it down" and I did.
Alternatively, it's possible it's your amplifier clipping. The IIB's are not at all efficient.

Look at the MUG in the link at the top of the page and fix the delam. Talked about a lot. The link has instructions linked that are easy to follow.
So, you just glue the coils back down. Would Gorilla glue work? Thanks,CHet
It's great stuff, it's just not what you'd use for Maggie repairs.
Welcome to the Planar Asylum. Now that you've your MG-IIB's, it's time to remove the socks and do an inspection. This will give you a better idea of how they work, find out just what's rattling and see if any prevenative work needs to be done. If you click on "TWEAKS" at the top of the page, you'll find a wealth of info on everything from repairs to mods. If there's anything you don't quite get, don't be afraid to ask questions here. Whatever problem you discover with your Maggies, someone else here has already "been there, done that & knows how to get it fixed".
OK What glue do I use? There seems to be various opinions. Thanks,Chet
