I should have known from the wheels, but got stuck in my first impression that it was some kind of obscure communist euro car. I had no clue, and was completely fooled, but was happy to play

You're actually closer than you thought. Substitute 'East' for 'West' Germany, and this little gem clearly influenced the stylist....the 'Gutbrod'!
That one blows me right away!
What a beauty!
So Nissan shouldn't have said "Inspired by ....".
More like "Shamelessly ripped off from ...!"

But at least it can't be said that it was shamelessly ripped off from the English or Italians, haha!Edit: and Nissan just mentioned nothing, not even inspired by! I do think the Figaro is a charmer though, would love to own one but they appreciate too quickly...

It isn't some East German stoneage peoples car.
It looks waaay more modern than many many others that hit the market in 1951.
The even raced successfully at Nurburgring!!!!!!!!!!

Most of the rest you can see is robbed -
The grille - Bugeye Sprite
The Eyebrows - Mini / VW / almost anything 1940's-50's
Soft top - Fiat 500C
Boot lid exposed hinges - anything Brittish and old
Chrome trim - anything American and old
But the wheels?
I can't work out that one!

so, how much do people PAY for these? I don't care about 'worth' since it's not worth anything to me. And I imagine getting some parts must be just weird......Ordering from Japan, maybe? I'd be tempted to hire a translator to make sure I got the right stuff....and include photos with my request.
Too much is never enough
