That would bankrupt our auto industry and pretty much end the USMCA trade agreement. But before you start comparing you need to be aware that the labour participation rate in Canada is nearly 5% higher than the U.S. at 66.5%.
Follow Ups:
Just ask yourself, are there any US-made-by-union-label EVs? I can't think of one.
The Bolt is assembled here but that's turned into a major clusterfuck. Who knows if GM will ever sell another one? The EV F150 isn't in production yet, it's supposed to be built at the Rouge. But, according to Wikipedia, even the Mustang Mach-E is only built in China and Mexico.
That's pretty slim pickins right there. The best EVs are either built elsewhere or built by non-union labor. Roll in the chip shortage/magnesium shortage/supply line issues, maybe dozens of people will be able to take advantage of the tax credit.
From where I sit, that EV tax credit is a big nothingburger.
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?
But once again it's Biden's protectionist posture that sticks in my craw. And I do realize that my closer ideological friends like Bernie and AOC would screw us over in a heartbeat.
Yeah, it was Biden's idea but Congress has to make it happen and that's far from certain.
Second of all, it's meaningless feel-good "we're doing something about global warming" optics.
That's all it is. Optics. Like 99% of the garbage that comes from our national government.
FWIW, I don't think there should be ANY EV credits. Why make it easier for affluent people to buy expensive cars?
Or, if we have to have the $12,500 credit, limit it to households earning $50K/year or less, make it fully deductible so that the buyer gets the full amount of the credit regardless of tax liability, and apply it to all EVs.
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?

Much of Canada already has rebates for EV's.
U.S. and union made.
Canadians would balk at buying foreign made products, too, especially such a major sector?
Have you forgotten that we contributed $3.3 billion (plus a line of credit to Ford) to the (Obama) bail out? I don't expect better from you, but I do from Biden.
Canada needed to help save American car companies just as we did. Anyway, I basically agree that our 2 countries (and Mexico too) should be working in concert, not against each other.
