"Kid Homicide." And a new verdict: Sorta guilty, but maybe self defense.
Follow Ups:
The standard self-defense plea is involuntary manslaughter, 1-6 years. He would have had two counts of it, plus weapons add-ons, meaning his sentence would have been 12-22 years, with early eligibility for parole.
I guess Wisconsin doesn't use the responsive verdict, which allows conviction on lesser charges if the greater charges fail. This keeps perps from walking away scot-free without jeopardy of a another trial.
The same strategy was used in Ohio when a cop, after a high speed chase, jumped on the hood of the suspects' car and emptied his service pistol through the windshield. He was acquitted because there were a lot of bullets flying and it could not be determined with any certainty that his bullets were the ones that actually caused the death of the suspects.
It appears to me that this strategy is commonly used when it's politically necessary that a person be charged, but a conviction isn't really desirable in the eyes of someone in power.
