Technically we did not give guns to the irresponsible. They already had/have them.
We just made it legal for the irresponsible to carry them in public on their persons without any training or a permit.
What could possibly go wrong with that?
Follow Ups:
Have a vote (let the NRA organize it - for free - give them something positive to do) to
decide which calibre of each type weapon it will be by polling those that want to own them.
Winning calibre is the ONLY type produced and available.
Police and military are issued larger weapons and control of those weapons gets
seriously monitored/controlled.
Each citizen that has their handgun and rifle (non semi automatic, non automatic, as close
to being produced to negate any alteration/modification) learns to live with what they have.
Each gun owner has to SUBSCRIBE to buy ammunition from licensed sellers. All ammunition
and guns Made in USA only. No exceptions.
Want to make your own ammunition? Have to have a license and limitations.
ANY gun other than the issued guns becomes illegal after a certain date and can be confiscated
to be recycled/destroyed. PERIOD. Bring the wrong gun to a gun range and it gets confiscated
and destroyed.
Gun collector? Your gun(s) need to qualify as collectable and be modified to not be able to fire.
So you now own a .38 or .44 or whatever it is everyone else has. You can modify it any way you
want cosmetically to make it "yours", get a special holster, get a special gun box, what ever bonds
you to it. Have the barrel engraved with your family crest. Give it a nifty name.
Your rifle, your shotgun? Same deal. No alterations or add-ons. Want a better hunting rifle than Ralph? Get a better scope or grips. Take better care of it. Learn to use and respect your weapon.
Completely levels the playing field as regards competitions.
You a hunter? Learn to hunt with what you have. Develop some real skills.
Sounds like a LOT of work and time and devotion and fortitude.
Sounds like something to invest in to have less guns in our future, to be mature and learn to
take guns seriously and not as just as some other type of hobby or pursuit or something to do.
Yeah, the "criminals" will still have guns but eventually and with focused effort on everyone's
part there will be less and less guns for them to get their hands on.
Anyway, it's an idea...

Nice thoughts but overly simplistic.
A 22 will kill a squirrel but only cripple a deer and a wounded animal is cruel. A 270 will do a nice job on a deer but explode a deer. A 28 gauge is idea for a quail but will often just cripple a pheasant. A 12 gauge is needed for pheasant and water fowl.
Most of my shotguns are manufactured in Europe. I cannot see any harm in importing arms. No different than importing cars, wine or cheese.
Unfortunately people with a propensity to kill will find the means.
We need to get our backbone back and ban the mental cases from gun ownership and get the illegal guns out of our urban wastelands.
And you do eat what you shoot, right?
Get a slingshot for the squirrel.
Bow and arrow for the deer.
Quail are stupid, throw a rock at them if you don't have a .510.
Maybe sport hunters need to find a new past time or actually learn what sport means.
Many (quality) imports can be better than domestic product, but most aren't used to kill although
there are some imported cheeses that the smell alone would make you wish you were dead.
So, you missed the point there. Which would be better monitoring/tracing of where guns go which would be easier to do minus imports.
Simplistic? Of course it's simplistic, it concerns AMERICANS!
We need to start somewhere is my basic thought.
The most recent episode of mass shootings (unless one happened today) did not
involve an urban wasteland and I'm pretty sure that's what inspired these recent
gun threads. It's always the latest mass shooting that inspires these too frequent
gun threads.

I have a permit, but I wasn't comfortable with most of the people I took the course with. I grew up with guns for hunting. I served in the military. I feel that most people shouldn't have guns, but the bad guys have them. They probably weren't trained either. Maybe it's just an equal opportunity thing.
How are the cops gonna know who the bad guy is if everybody's got a gun?
Maybe I'll just stay home until this sorts itself out.
If a gun is being openly carried (aka visibly displayed) it is most likely "legal" and the person carrying it is NOT a "bad guy".
There's one criteria for ya!

Trust me they are sorting it out.
