I just tried to install Turbo Tax this week and it wouldn't load because it only will install if you have Windows 10. Luckily, we have another system with dual boot Win7 and 10.
Requiring a Microsoft account and password also pisses me off. You can't even install Win10 without one or a connection to the internet.

Actually, I installed Win10 to run virtually on the Mac using Parallels. No MS account required.
My problem with Turbo Tax is the cost. Every year it goes up.
I just go to Turbo Tax and the program comes up. I put in the info and it spits out my taxes and I file electronically. I save a copy to my computer and print a copy for the file. I didn't have to load anything. Did you buy a copy of the software? I haven't done that in years.
you can file for free using Free Fillable Forms at the IRS website. Looks just like a tax form, you enter the info. No income limits.
Been using it for years.
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?
Yeah, I buy the new Premier version every year. Ours get complicated with an S Corp. and rental property. Then, California has different rules and adjustments that further complicate everything. For us, the fact that it loads everything from the previous year and does all the depreciation and tracks all of that for the rental is worth it for me.
But, I agree, it gets more expensive every year, $69 this year at Costco. Since it's a business write off, I do get a tax discount on the price. ;)

been using it for thirty years or so.
I use Intuit Standard which is quite powerful in Canada - it was completely adequate in my 7 figure years. $29.99 at Shopper's Drug Mart and a $6.00 senior's discount! So it isn't just drugs you get ripped off on.

I have been using Turbo Tax for years. Early on, I bought a disc and installed it. Now I just use Turbo Tax from their website, and the price is the same as you mention. I just log in with a userid and password. Once you have an account, your information from the previous year is already there imported for you. It asks you to verify in case something has changed. It imports information from financial institutions or SS or wherever for you or you can input it yourself. It already has a list of past years information that it has loaded that you can add to or delete from. I'm pretty sure we are talking about apples and apples, but I don't have to load software onto my computer. The software resides with Turbo Tax. I know you are way more computer savvy than I am, so I could be missing something.
I have only imcome and investments. I got tired of the cost of Turbo Tax long ago,and switched to Block. It does everything I need and I usually get the edition that includes the state return for 20 bucks.

Yeah, I used to use Tax Cut. Then, I believe H&R Block bought them and the first year or so was all online and simplified which caused me to go back to Turbo Tax. Trust me, I no fan of Intuit and wish we could dump QuickBooks too. If I could find something that would import all the various rental property depreciation schedules from many different years of remodels and upgrades, I move in a New York minute.

You're right that there was one year (2002?) where TaxCut / H&R Block simply did not come out with a Mac version (may have been related to an OS transition on the Mac - can't quite remember), so I used TurboTax that year, which somehow made me end up for whatever reason owing a much higher payment to the feds. I went back to H&R Block the following year and have been surfing the inertia ever since - and that includes paying for it every year.
