So Microslop's latest "features upgrade" trashed the OS on my laptop. I had to rebuild it from the recovery partition on the hard drive. Now that it's up and running again I find out that, unlike the version it replaced, I can't log into my computer without providing either my microsoft password or a pin. There doesn't seem to be a way to avoid providing both.Very irritating, fixin a problem that doesn't exist.
/Rant off

which is why two step verification is good.
I think we started two step with Office 365 last year some time.Google has done it for ages.
And now Facebook.BTW, you get Dark Mode now.
How cool is that!

Scammers are cleverly getting around two step with some clever manipulation of the younger generation.
One beauty going around is getting an email from a "friend" saying "I think my Facebook account has been hacked and I'm changing my password, but my phone messaging is dodgy. If I give FB your phone no., could you please forward on the verification code FB sends you to me?".
What's really happening is that you are are assisting a bot to hack your own FB account!

Yup. Idiots and assholes meet at the intersection of Stupidity and Evil every day.I once got the "My wallet and passport have been stolen and I'm stuck in London" routine. Ha! What the scammers didn't know was that I had just been in a rehearsal with the guy they were pretending to be!

Really ? When did they change it from WALK and DON'T WALK ?

For one, H&R really screwed up, the olman redid his friend's taxes and got him ten grand back, over three years there was even interest added.
And bear i mind, you have to put in all the information to Turbotax as you would the regular form. On federal, the only additional things you have to do it look up your AGI on a table to find the tax owed and see (not that ikely here) if you can get EIC. If you have investments there is a form for that. State can e a little bit more complex but actually I stopped filing state when I worked in a different city than I lived, in fact a different county. But if you must do state, which is the case if you owe them, the instructions are right there.
Where H&R screwed up was not asking the right questions. Well Turbotax doesn't really ask them either.
Not filing state means I lost my refunds every year, but then no city taxes. In Ohio they will double whammy you.
Another good joke was they wanted to tattle on your online purchases and pay the sales tax. HA ! One more of my way of dealing with the government - If they ask they do not know.
...came with Windows 10. Took 2-3- minutes to boot. Replaced with Linux. Now takes about 30 seconds. I've been using linux for about 15 years. Only reason I miss Windows is PSUD2.
I don't really understand why someone would hate Windows. Granted for years it was a POS but Windows 10 is pretty good. I was using NT prior to going for Windows 8 now Windows 10.
I use Windows to launch apps and store stuff on the hard-drive. Seems to work well enough for me. But I'm not a power Windows user - keeping my stuff organized and running apps is about all I do with it. Seems good enough for me. There are many useful tools and utilities. I find the calculator to be very excellent.
The updates are the main problem.
What this world needs is a new operating system. I've been saying that for years.
Apple and Windows are both long in the tooth. Too many updates, too fat, bloated, slow and unreliable. And Linux is not an option for the populace.
Maybe Bezos is the guy who can git 'er done.

Nothing personal 51, you bought this response for being last on the list.
Anyway, there is Linux. Thing is it is like learning MAC. But less money but less support.
Friend of mine emails, a Win 10 update came and he waa using Firefox, for some time and had a ton of bookmarks in it. Windows completely deleted it and forced him into Edge, and didn't have the common fucking decency to pick up his bookmarks.
I don't feel like it, but I wouldn't mind a collaberation of info on :
A. When did 95 come out ?
2. How much of the market was using it in the same time Win 10 has been out
#. How long has Win 10 been out ?
(to reach a whopping 13% of the market !)
If I have to learn all this shit gain, Linux is the better choice just because of the money.
I've got a Windows 95b disc around here somewhere. I think this was the first version to support USB....than only USB1, at that.
In those days, the Norton 'crash protect' that came with the antivirus CAUSED more problems than it cured......
98 was very good for its time, while ME was a disaster. I still hae a laptop with 2k Pro and a copy of XP around here somewhere.......
Too much is never enough
"Anyway, there is Linux."No, there isn't Linux. There are multiple suppliers and versions of "Linux", and, it's an "open source" "product", which makes it a non-starter as a mainstream operating system. That is why, after 25-plus years, it's still a niche operating system and a small player in the world of personal computers.
If you read my earlier post, you'd already know that I wrote Linux is NOT a contender. If it were, it'd been king of the hill LONG AGO.
To sum up, and reiterate, the world needs a new operating system.

been Apple family, always contented.
It appears the PIN can be removed, allowing you to go back to using a regular password, unless you need the PIN for something else. See below.
Thankfully, my Win 10 computers are members of a domain, and my domain controller runs Windows 2012 Server Essentials which knows nothing of PINs.
I know Microsoft is trying to make it hard for users to use a local account rather than a Microsoft identity. But to be fair to Microsoft, Apple has been doing the same thing for a long time.
i think its protecting them from bootleg software. Have to log in with psssword to get pin. Really sucks!

If you go to Settings -> Accounts -> Sign-in options, there should be a "Require sign-in" option that you can set to "Never". That will at least prevent it from asking you every time you wake the computer.
I just tried to install Turbo Tax this week and it wouldn't load because it only will install if you have Windows 10. Luckily, we have another system with dual boot Win7 and 10.
Requiring a Microsoft account and password also pisses me off. You can't even install Win10 without one or a connection to the internet.

having migrated to a Mac Mini last year.
You can't even install Win10 without one...
Actually, I installed Win10 to run virtually on the Mac using Parallels. No MS account required.
My problem with Turbo Tax is the cost. Every year it goes up.
I just go to Turbo Tax and the program comes up. I put in the info and it spits out my taxes and I file electronically. I save a copy to my computer and print a copy for the file. I didn't have to load anything. Did you buy a copy of the software? I haven't done that in years.
you can file for free using Free Fillable Forms at the IRS website. Looks just like a tax form, you enter the info. No income limits.
Been using it for years.
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?
Yeah, I buy the new Premier version every year. Ours get complicated with an S Corp. and rental property. Then, California has different rules and adjustments that further complicate everything. For us, the fact that it loads everything from the previous year and does all the depreciation and tracks all of that for the rental is worth it for me.
But, I agree, it gets more expensive every year, $69 this year at Costco. Since it's a business write off, I do get a tax discount on the price. ;)
-Rod
been using it for thirty years or so.
I use Intuit Standard which is quite powerful in Canada - it was completely adequate in my 7 figure years. $29.99 at Shopper's Drug Mart and a $6.00 senior's discount! So it isn't just drugs you get ripped off on.

I have been using Turbo Tax for years. Early on, I bought a disc and installed it. Now I just use Turbo Tax from their website, and the price is the same as you mention. I just log in with a userid and password. Once you have an account, your information from the previous year is already there imported for you. It asks you to verify in case something has changed. It imports information from financial institutions or SS or wherever for you or you can input it yourself. It already has a list of past years information that it has loaded that you can add to or delete from. I'm pretty sure we are talking about apples and apples, but I don't have to load software onto my computer. The software resides with Turbo Tax. I know you are way more computer savvy than I am, so I could be missing something.
I have only imcome and investments. I got tired of the cost of Turbo Tax long ago,and switched to Block. It does everything I need and I usually get the edition that includes the state return for 20 bucks.

Yeah, I used to use Tax Cut. Then, I believe H&R Block bought them and the first year or so was all online and simplified which caused me to go back to Turbo Tax. Trust me, I no fan of Intuit and wish we could dump QuickBooks too. If I could find something that would import all the various rental property depreciation schedules from many different years of remodels and upgrades, I move in a New York minute.
-Rod
You're right that there was one year (2002?) where TaxCut / H&R Block simply did not come out with a Mac version (may have been related to an OS transition on the Mac - can't quite remember), so I used TurboTax that year, which somehow made me end up for whatever reason owing a much higher payment to the feds. I went back to H&R Block the following year and have been surfing the inertia ever since - and that includes paying for it every year.
Aside from trashing your laptop, it's Microsuck's need to move things and change things for no good reason.
Update the OS, sure, but why make it harder to use?
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?
and one was enough to get me to buy Apple after that.. I've NEVER had one problem with my Apple computers. I did however LOVE my Windows phone! I was really sad when Microsoft decided to pull the plug on their phone division. Easiest smart phone to operate that I ever owned. Too bad that they never caught on and went the way of the dinosaurs....
I thought it was the first Microsoft OS that could compete with Mac.
But that was then, this is now. My first experience with the Mac OS was Mountain Lion. Anybody who started with Mountain Lion would be perfectly at home with Catalina.
And I could understand if a Windows user struggled with the differences between XP and 10. But it's ridiculous that somebody who hasn't used 10 for three years has a difficult time using 10 now.
I used 10 every day at work. I had a box at home that ran 10, had to use it in a pinch here and there. No sweat.
But I don't recognize half of the shit in the OS today.
The problem is not that there is evil in the world, the problem is that there is good. Because otherwise, who would care?
