Black bears are typically elusive and peaceful animals that want nothing to do with humans. My wife and I woke up one morning in our tent with one walking around within feet. We could hear him snuffling around. We just quietly stayed put until he left, got up and had coffee. His tracks were all around our tent.
Brown bears are a bit more aggressive, but most times aren't a threat either. Encountering either that is acting aggressive with nothing but a sharp stick usually results in a well fed bear.
Follow Ups:
YOU have the sharp stick OR the Bear?
Backcountry hikers to tend to meet 'acclimated' bears should carry Uber Pepper Spray......
I think 45$ is the 'sucker price' but this may do the trick.....
I would tend to stay OUT of any territory with Brown Bears (bigger than black or grizzly) and certainly the Kodiak sub-species.
The ONE bear I've met in the wild up near the San Gorgonio Wilderness was gone over the Horizone in about 30 seconds. We came around a corner just before dark and scared the crap out of it.
Too much is never enough
I always carried pepper spray when I hiked in grizzly country Yellowstone and Glacier. I didn't worry about it when there were black bears. We never took food into the tent and hung it when we could. Above tree line, hanging food can be a problem.
The bear prowling around our tent was a black bear. Spending the night out where there are grizzlies is an experience.
I think at least PART of the problem is that Bears get accustomed to people. And lose what would otherwise be a 'natural' fear.
A Bear whch avoids YOU is much less a problem....I hope.....
Too much is never enough
