As a fellow photographer, I understand that you're experimenting. This 3-zone defocus-focus-defocus effect might work very well for some images, but it doesn't work for this one.

We'll agree to disagree.
I think it looks very 'miniature' I can experiment with change of parameters, too......the shot I posted was @default.....
I experimentd on a portrait or 2 but NO GOOD.
I'll try something already depth of field limited.....like maybe a shot from this series?
NOT THIS ONE....This is an 8meg JPG but I could start with a RAW file.....
I'm no longer recording any JPG images having gone to RAW exclusively...
Too much is never enough
The flower shot is very nice. The out of focus tips of the flower softens what could otherwise be too stark/harsh. Nice.
With regard to the first photo, note that there are some issues with the tops of the trees on the left, and issues in the lower left. I don't remember offhand if there was anything else.

Maybe it works better if I were to post the original shot?
Taken @200mm, it is from a short distance......
Keep in mind this is JUST AN EXPERIMENT and I've got a ways to go before I call any shot 'done'.
The flower is AS SHOT using an 85mm lens at maybe f2 whcih minimized depth of field. If I took a duplicate shot? Focus somewhere 'in between' far and near AND use f11 or f16 to maximize depth.
Maybe I could try a LONGER lens but I'd have to limit myself to f2.8
