...on many of the new/newer (C6, C7, C8) Vettes, that "plastic" is carbon fiber--which on a new C8 is a $5K option. It reduces weight, and subsequently improves performance.
As for all of the "inserts", they are functional--for engine and brake cooling, or fresh air induction to feed the engine. They also serve to direct airflow through/around the car to improve downforce (handling/stability) at higher speeds.
These aren't your '70's/80's Camaros with lots of fake scoops and stickers--these all serve a purpose.

But on the New Honda Civic....they are all plastic and NON-Functional.
I wish I could remember the numbers on the Acura NSx which has the internal airflow management of a modern jet aircraft....And enough radiator / cooler / intercooler and ductwork to plumb a small apartment building.
Too much is never enough
...with respect to some of the true performance cars of the last few decades, but there's still a market for the "poseurs"--lots of "glitz" that doesn't add to the "go".
New new NSX is a "unicorn". It's got all the tech and a hybrid drivetrain, but it has not been well-received. I've already seen used ones sell for less than pristine examples of the originals.

The Original NSX was a freak.
Nearly as perfect for the designed purpose as possible. And set that segment on its ear when introduced. Imagine that! A RELIABLE super sports car.
Honda tried and failed to tap into the MOJO of the first edtition. An expensive bit of mediocre...
