I know, Tim. I shoulda. I've seen some nifty little iPhone stereo mic add ons for about $100. I don't often get into these kind of music gigs where various combos are jamming tho. I wonder if they are much tolerated at an actual concert or club? Probably not.

And we got to go to a lot of concerts, FREE too! Like the one I just posted about in Music. But I'm not recording currently. So, we had to pay. And I'm a Patron of AHE as well, with a small annual contribution. The gear included a big tall |-/ (plus /) on top) mike stands. A pair of small Rode cardioid condenser mikes in ORTF, or a crossed pair (fixed) of same in one item, and a Marantz digital recorder. Big reels of cable, power cords cases and the like!!!!
Then one went in and 'edited' it all, in their studios.
One day, when my body returns to a 'new normal' ....
and I'm not spending my dribble of $ on the new main system, .... still in progress
I _will_ get back into recording, pick up some 414s, and a pair of similar sounding omnis suitable bars etc, my own 4Ch SS recorder, a 4Ch mixer/PSU. Plus a good PC based 4ch to 2ch down mixer with a rear 2ch option - and get learning.
Or I'll get another illness or condition, and die!!!!

The AKG C-414 is a great mic for certain solo instruments and voice. But as an ensemble recording mic, it's limited since it is a large-diaphragm mic. This adversely affects the quality of the off-axis sound, both source and ambient.
You'll be better off with a 1/2" diaphragm and first-order cardioid pattern - much smoother off-axis response which is more consistent with the on-axis response. There are several on the market. My personal favorite which I own are Schoeps dual-pattern condensers. They're extremely high quality mics, and I can use them as the situation dictates: widely-spaced A-B in either omni or cardioid pattern, as well as ORTF and X-Y, and as a solo instrument mic in either omni or cardioid pattern.
Other very high quality mics to consider for ensemble recording include DPA, Earthworks and Sennheiser, among others. At a lower price, Rode and Shure have some very nice models as well.
