Next time wear a pair of these. They are very effective in keeping my fingers from freezing while shoveling the snow on my driveway and removing the icicles from the car.
If a thing's worth doing, it's worth doing well

Follow Ups:
Lots of room for moving gear levers and braking, even enough for grabbing a thermos bottle.
Wore mine throughout each Canberra winter on my rides to work, 15km, for 12 years.
Used the AIS' own heat rub on my toes and feet before setting out.
Toe-clips with Gortex toe-clip covers.
I was very fit back then.

I wear leather full finger gloves with merino inner gloves underneath. Good, but not good descending at 50kmh in the freezing early mornings.
I probably need some new quality outers - a little thicker.
The mitten type ones worry me with shifters and brakes. I got rid of one pair of gloves after they got pinched and caught in the shifters and I couldn't get them out again!
Cheers,

Wind chill is a big factor in Winter. I found that cutting the impact of that on my hands, feet and ears was a good thing to do.
I was able to balance driving on roads and Canberra's shared tarred 'walking paths', but my nose still froze! :-)!

No fun at all!
The merino inners I have are amazing - Kathmandu.
I just need something a little more wind proof on the outside!
Cheers,
