Committed to go all electric by 2019, abandoning the traditional all-gas engine, going either all-electric and/or hybrid.
Wow. The first to do so.
And while gas is so cheap, gas designs are so good, and more popular than ever.
Follow Ups:
Limited resources and the China influence.......
The Atlantic:
"Sweden-based automaker is lone among the world's major automakers to move so aggressively into electric or hybrid cars. Volvo sold around half a million cars last year, significantly less than the world's largest car companies such as Toyota, Volkswagen, and GM, but far greater than the 76,000 sold by Tesla, the all-electric carmaker."
The New York Times adds:
"But by focusing on electrification, Volvo can concentrate its limited research and development resources on new technologies rather than continuing to invest in fuel-powered motors that may become obsolete. ...
Volvo will also be able to draw on technology developed by its parent company. Geely sells electric cars in China, one of the fastest growing markets for battery-powered vehicles."
According to CNNMoney:
"The shift is likely to have been influenced by Chinese auto company Geely, which bought Volvo in 2010.
China has been swift to adopt electric vehicles. The world's second-largest economy, which is plagued by air pollution, wants 5 million electric cars on its roads by 2020.
More than half of the world's electric cars are already sold in China, according to a report from the Center for Automotive Research at Germany's University of Duisberg-Essen. In 2016, Chinese drivers bought 507,000 electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles out of 873,000 worldwide.
Volvo's announcement comes just weeks after U.S. electric car firm Tesla said it was working with Shanghai officials to establish a manufacturing facility in the region to better serve China."
Yeah, I'm kinda wondering where all the electricity is going to come from, and should invest in those companies. Maybe that's part of why we're all supposed to use CFL or LED light bulbs - so they can use the electricity output to power cars.
I suppose I could see the once beautiful fields of Ireland, Scandinavia, etc. covered with windmills and solar panels, along with the outback of China. Anybody know a few good companies to invest in for that?
'Course, the other shoe to drop could be governmenal penalties for using too much electricity for your car/SUV/truck. Don't doubt me on this - that's another of the ways government not only controls your life, but also benefits by doing so.
Have a lovely, eco-friendly and sustainable day!
:)
nuclear, I bought GE awhile back, also new CEO coming in too. It is cheap, I paid $29 I think.
You said the "N" word!
:)
You should start reading the real news. :) The governmental push for electric vehicles in Europe is well under way. I read about it on Reuters or other news org a long time ago.Contrary to Volvo going under, Volvo is ahead of the curve. Well, if they're too far ahead of the curve, they might go under, but that's an issue of timing.
European governments are providing, ahem, "tax incentives" for going electric, and, ahem, "penalties" for gasoline vehicles. Ya gotta love government control over business and your life.
Some societal activists portray the U.S. as lagging behind. We're portrayed as lagging behind in many things as compared to Europe, but I'm fine with that. I don't live in a 200 year old apartment building without air conditioning or screens on the windows and is in serious need of a paint job. I also prefer having a clothes washer and dryer in my own home. Don't get me wrong, Europe is nice to visit, and there are places where I'd love to live - as long as they have modern standards of living in a home (or apartment). It'd also be nice if gasoline wasn't $4 a gallon. NOW who's lagging behind?
:)

It's all about government subsidies!
For any of you old enough to have seen this movie...
While you mentioned the benefits of the established technology, you didn't mention the reasons it is being replaced. It seemed an odd string of one sided statements, perhaps just offhand remarks, because it seems to indicate a failure to understand the reasons electric cars are gaining market share. That can't be right.
It seemed odd to me to praise costs, popularity, and designs of gas machines when all of that is relative, and subject to change. Horses were certainly more popular, cost less, and were a more dependable design than a car at one time. The problem then and now, pollution.
Instead of piles of horse waste, gasoline waste costs could be dispersed into the atmosphere where all share in the effects of internal combustion waste products. A native guy whose family has lived off the land for centuries , that now has to move to the city and be poor and work away from his children, might not think a giant SUV is that big of a deal.
The Chinese seem to actually be aware of the problem of dependence on imported oil, and are trying to move to a far more electric vehicle stance.
So for Volvo, it is a political move.
The research is underway to make a recharge as fast as a gas refill.
If this works, then gas motors will quickly depart the scene. Volvo may be on to something.
Who is the present owner of Volvo?
Cheers,
SB
Never heard of them. Chinese.

This will be interesting. Kinda do-or-die, for the company.
...for either mfgr or buyer. 100% plug-in electric would be.
You are quite correct
If I remember accurately, jaguar also has also announced all electric in the future. Most companies are planning something like this.
