I made reservations last year for a hotel in western KY, which is about an hour from the path of totality. So, with telescope in-hand, wife and I will try to find a spot to set up where it will be clear (everything rides on that!). If you're around that region, p.m. me and we'll make arrangements to meet.
But I'll probably find a backroad ditch to camp in somewhere between Denver and Casper.
Unless I can grovel/freeload with friends for a place in Portland, fly up, then drive to Salem.
That's for sure! Just for grins I began looking for modest hotels along fwy I-25 heading north from Denver toward Casper WY. Casper is one of the larger cities up that way but there are several stops before Casper that will be in the 100% Eclipse band.Of the very few hotel rooms still available along I-25, they were charging 4x - 5x typical pricing. That puts Comfort Inn class rooms at $400 or so with others as high as $900 for one night!
From our location it's only a 3.5 hour drive north to place us in that 100% Eclipse band. We may drive up in the morning and observe from one of the rest stops or truck stops along the way. Of course others will probably have the same idea so I'm not sure how crowded they might be. If we go, we'll just pack a cooler full of drinks and food.

The central Oregon coast sold out last year for that day. Talk about planning ahead.
