Good Stuff.
When you go to the fair just LOOK at all the photography. The DelMar Fari (San Diego) hangs a couple thousand photos every year. And had a seperate section for CellPhone work. Neat.
All sorts of approachs and outputs represented from the common / beauty shot to more ambitious works.
All fun
One thing that happens annually is the 'assignment'. You sign up, and show up on the appointed day and get an ASSIGNMENT. You have 4 or so hours. Than choose your BEST shot and get judged against all the others in the competition. Lots of fun and a good learning experience.

Follow Ups:
I was also going to say, good eye, but was a little slow to the party. All have such striking composition, I can easily see why you got the recognition.
I have only been to the Cal state fair one summer, multiple times, and it was a blast. I usually can only make it to the los angeles and orange county fair, once in a while, which Is a lot more urban and commercial.
They ALL still probably have a good Farm / Agricultural section, as a bow to the origins of the fair.
SD is right ON the coast at Del Mar. Not exactly heavy urban, but not rural, either.
I havent' been to the LA fair since Doctor Demento did a show. And Orange County in nearly as long.
I go for, in no particular order, Food, Entertainment, WoodWorking, Photography, Shopping.
One good thing about SD Fair? They have 2 offsite parking areas. On weekends, a college parking lot is used and it is easy, fast and way conventient. and Paved. I've parked 'in the dirt' before and come back to a car COVERED in a thick layer of dust. And to top it off, they had sprayed water ON the dust so my shoes were all MUD. Great Combo.
