A couple recent dog and camera walk pics from the American River Parkway
"Don't blame the victim" This is one of the more romantic versions of this scene. There were several other boy mallards taking turns to see whose sperm would live on.
green heron. We were both holding still so we couldn't see each other. Or maybe he was watching the mallards.
Follow Ups:
Both images sharp enough to shave with.
Hey, thanks! Yeah, if that lens can't get it pretty sharp, I know I probably did something wrong. Usually, it's because there isn't enuf light. I was lucky to get much closer than usual to this guy, which definitely helps.
Nice, thanks!
We get Mallards down here, but no Green Herons.
Pretty bird, for a Heron!

Thanks for looking! Egrets and great blue herons are the most common here, Tim. A couple kinds of egrets, actually. I can see them every day, pretty much. Greens are rarer, and usually see me first and fly before I get a shot off. Even rarer, within walking distance, are black crowned night herons.
As for tele.... I definitely appreciate the set up I have, but I kinda 'need' a longer lens. There are some good 150-600mm lenses out there if I want to spend at least $1k. I keep hoping a good used copy will pop up, but the ones I want (probably Tamron or Sigma) are fairly new, so I never see a used one on Craigslist. What I have is a 70-200 Canon with a 1.4x tele extender on a crop camera (Canon 7D). So, 200mm x 1.4 x 1.6 crop factor = 448mm. Yet, I whine for more.
