I think I am slowly falling in love with Mexico. Starting with the food.
I can't speak spanish or I would maybe look into moving there. I took spanish for about 12 years growing up, all I know is asi asi (I think it means so so), and bueno (which I think means good). I didn't learn anything else in 12 years of spanish classes, we used that time to mess around as is typical of NYC public education.
My little stupid joke there that probably no one gets except me (I crack myself up sometimes), one of my favorite Mexican death metal bands, Brujeria.
Follow Ups:
Mexico is a, or rather CAN be a dangerous place for Gringos.
My Mexican MIL picked up some cash at her bank. 3 mintues later, a guy comes up, sticks a GUN (illegal in Mexico) in the window and demands the purse.
All occupants of car were Mexican or naturalized US citizens born in Mexico.
Obvous 'inside' job or they really had the place staked out. Either way, the cops should be capable, but are NOT. Fairly good at taking reports, though.
Bullethead, if you ever go to Mexico, NOTE that all armored car guys wear MAJOR Bulletproof vests, carry shotguns or HK91 or HK93 military arms. These guys Don't Screw Around.
Tourists are Victims waiting to happen. I stay out of the place even though everyone I'd go with speaks perfect, local dialect Spanish. Riding the public bus is a particular thrill.
If you want a better 'latin' experience? Maybe Costa Rica. Nice place. In Mexico? I liked Santa Maria Huatulco. Get away from the tourist areas and live quiet. I suspect the wealthy have a nice enclave which is where I'd target my house search.
Too much is never enough
I get rather conflicting ideologies about life in Mexico as an ex-patriot.
Couple of people do really well there, mostly they are retired and live in places such as where you mentioned, living the quiet life. Laying low.
that's what I would do.
However one thing I didn't know is that you are not allowed arms, that's not a country I would want to be in then, especially with the current drug situation relating to cartels, which this country is largely responsible for due to our lavish lifestyles of excess debauchery, and our insane policies relating to them only make the black market more attractive.
interesting I learned about that today.
NY is pretty safe for the most part however I've been around the block a few times, my life was threatened a few times over cigarettes. Since they are about $1 each here I've had some characters over the past 17 years while working in Midtown mention they would kill me if I didn't share one. I've seen a lot of shady activity going on a few blocks from the UN. Gang activity, drug running and prostitution. The difference here is it is covered up by smoke and mirrors, not out in the open. Their clients were lawless diplomats.
I've read you can bribe police in Mexico for as little as $5 USD. Lawless, but knowing arms are not allowed that changes things a LOT for me.
I'd avoid Mexico unless I were VERY wealthy and could afford armed guards or live in a diplomatic or other restricted area.
A few isolated places which I won't discuss would have potential as a nice retirement place.
For MY nickel?
Costa Rica. Country has NO standing army. Clean streets with Street Signs. (unlike its neighbor Nicaragua) Nice people. Good national Health System. Ex Pat Friendly. Some Climatic variation with some drier areas as well as the typical rainforest stuff.
I even saw a couple PIZZA PARLORS. Seafood pizza is a kick.
Unfortunately, many of the rivers ALSO have Crocs. So? No Waterskiing.
Too much is never enough
$15 for breakfast?! You're wealthier than I!
But seriously, no worries about Mexico. Since guns are outlawed, you don't have to be concerned about getting shot. (Same is true of Chicago.)
Actually, I've been to Monterrey, MX a number of times, thanks to my Compadre. Three weddings, New Year's Eve 2000, and a few other times. Just don't drink the water.
:)
A poor black dude friend of mine who lives in Chicago, he calls it chirak...
Mexico seems ok to me, rather live there than Chicago, I am not feeling NY, every time I watch NY news they repeat and repeat how strong we are to love here and how great NY is.
Nazi propagandists say, repeat a lie over and over and over and over and the public will soon believe it.
I have a lot of examples, but don't want to get banned.
I got a friend coming over tonight for a listening session, he's a vinyl guy that deals with me until 3am on my strictly digital setup which causes him pain after a few hours, I like digital but I understand his love for vinyl, if the damn records were less than $35 a clip I would take out my pro-Ject turntable from my basement and get into it, but I just can't afford that insanity right now.
What ever happened to the cassette tape
Sure, some new releases are exorbitantly priced but I bought about 50 new records for Christmas (for my own self and as presents) and probably averaged under $9/record shipped to mi casa.
