"Once this was all Black Plasma and Imagination"-Michael McClure
Follow Ups:
You almost make me wanna plant some again. When we first bought the house we're in there were three very nice hybrid roses in front. They'd been sorely neglected so I spent a lot of time and money on them and got some really beautiful blossoms. Ultimately I gave up on them and let the neighbor come and dig them up for her yard. Fighting black spot (for some reason an unrelenting problem), aphids, dead heading, pruning. I just finally said screw it, they're pretty but too much work. I decided if I was gonna expend that much effort it'd better be on something I can eat. So now I have five raised beds in the back where I grow tomatoes, onions, garlic and shallots. I just harvested my fall onions. Got ~40 pounds from a 4'x 8' bed. The garlic and shallots are still probably three weeks away, and I've just started to get the first few ripe tomatoes. Last year I stopped weighing my tomato take when I hit 160 lbs. I cut back on tomato plants a bit this year.
If I had to expend much time (beyond some weeding and watering) on the care of these roses I
probably wouldn't. They are in the garden of our Church, someone prunes them twice a year
and they just seem to... thrive.
I'd somehow mess 'em up.
IF I were to spend a lot of time gardening (would if I had the time) I'd likely go in your direction
and invest the time on something tasty.
I do LOVE the roses though.
