Ditto the Glock. I use a recycled police version 17 with new Triicon sights and a pair of 17+1 mags.
OTOH, I also have a shotgun where the distincitive sound of cycling the action might be sufficient enough. :)
Follow Ups:
Leave that for impressive movie sound effects! The experts in the tactical training classes I've taken all agreed that the noise of cycling the action could alert a home intruder to your whereabouts in a dark room, perhaps giving them a first-shot advantage. The only sound you want them to hear is "boom", followed by their raspy last breath.
Similar to you, I keep a 9mm S&W Shield at hand, and my Mossberg 590A1 12ga a few feet away from the bed, but with one already in the chamber. One guy I knew called me paranoid, but I'd rather be called that than, "The dearly departed".

My humanity requires warning an intruder that if he enters my bedroom, he will get shot. As my carry permit training dictates. Our bedroom is in the back of the house. If the breach is such that I'm aware of entry, then I'll call 911 and close the door. Since the room opens out on both sides, I want the intruder to know I'm in there.
Which side? They won't know - unless they do make the mistake of entry.
... to avoid the threat if at all possible, outside the home. I live in a state in which the castle doctrine applies, so there is no duty to retreat if the intruder is inside the home.
That said, I do have reinforced door jambs and an alarm system. I hope I never to have to deal with a life threatening situation in the first place, by doing what is possible to prevent it.

As do I, but I'd much rather win via deterrence instead of unnecessary deadly force. :)
Which is why I do everything I can to keep them out of my house in the first place.

Which RMR did you get. Actively shopping. Debating mounting on G 23 or Sig P320. Either way I will have to send slider to Suarez International for machining. Leaning toward Sig

I purchased this from Amazon and had a local gunsmith install it.
Not Trijicon brand.

I don't own a shutgun but have thought about getting one.
My first Glock was the Glock 23 in .40S&W caliber. That caliber was gaining popularity in the early 1990's with Police departments when I bought mine. It is exactly the same size as the Glock 19 but 13 +1. In recent years, 9mm ammo has improved significantly so my more recent pistols are all 9mm.
Have a 23 and put a 357 Sig barrel in it. Standardizing on 9
I had an excellent Sig P-229 .40SW that would take a 357 Sig barrel but I never tried it. I ended up selling the P-229 not because it was a bad pistol.
It was outstanding, but didn't quite fit me right and the DA/SA trigger was kind of odd since none of my others fired that way. Since I was standardizing on 9mm (sort of) I ended up selling the P-229.
My small collection now consists of:
Glock 19 9mm
Glock 43 9mm
S&W M&P Shield 9mm (my CC choice)
Springfield XD-S 9mm
Glock 23 .40SW
Kimber UltraCarry II .45
Colt Combat Commander .45
Springfield 1911A1 .45
S&W 686 .357 revolver 4"
Ruger .22 w/bull barrel for plinking
Get yourself a nice sniper rifle, they are much fun.
