Funny thing that; I have a harder time recognizing vehicles with alphanumeric names. It's not immediate to me.
Example; although I really like Mercedes, what is an SL600? 500? No idea. And one thing I just found out about them recently; 4MATIC has to do with their AWD system. Sounds like a cheap tag for a 4 speed autoMATIC. Poor badging IMO.
One of my least favorite car branding however is slight changes to words. Ultima; because this car is ultimate? No... it's not.
Another bad one is the new (rebadged) Toyota 86. Just an 86? Hm.
Methinks automakers are running out of creative ideas.
Follow Ups:
In M-B speak:
SL=roadster
600= 6 liter engine
500= 5 liter engine
Similar scheme with BMW. First number is series (odd=2 door, even=4 door). Next two digits indicate engine size in liters.

OK, on the MB, but what about C class, etc.?
Also, I drove BMW's for 18 years, I think either your system there is incorrect or I am reading it wrong.
My last car was a 325i; AFAIK 3 series is size not doors (it was a 4 door BTW, the i indicating 4 door from my recollection), 25 is a 2.5, but there were also 325's that later had a 2.8 before they called it a 328 IIRC.
3 series had both 2 and 4 doors (odd, so your statement = 2 door)
4 series I've only seen in 2 door so far (even, so your statement = 4 door)
6 series mostly if not all are 2 doors (even, so your statement = 4 door)
7 series mostly if not all 4 doors (odd, so your statement = 2 door)
...
...i stands for injection harking back to the times when some cars still had carburettors.
A 5 door, 3.5 liter?

But these days with turbos everywhere it just means that it has more power than a 530.
For example the M550d still has the 3.5L diesel just in a higher state of tune than the 535d.
In the new BMW speak, the evens are largely two doors (2 series, 4 series, 6 series) while the odds are sedans (3 series, 5 series, 7 series). There once was a two door variation of the 7 series logically called an 8 series (840,850).
I say largely, because the 1 series has both configurations and the evens offer four door "Gran Coupes". :)
My 3 is a 2 door.

Which in itself is a business.
