What hurts ALL I/C engines is that you need what in stereo or hifi would be 'dynamic range'.
Automotive diesels, for example, can have a flat torque peak from 1500 to 3500 rpm or more.
This allows very high gearing for maximum economy.
An Engine DESIGNED for maximum volumetric efficiency at a very small range of speeds, and used to drive a genset (alternator?) can have even HIGHER economy. It doesnt' have to be very useful at the speed range expected of an engine GEARED to the wheels.

I'm thinking a micro turbine would offer some refinement over the two cylinder diesel generator in my boat?

Wow! Bladon is doing well.
First time I heard about them was on a local TV news when they started to work with Jaguar about 10 years ago. At that time Bladon Jets was a pair of brothers working out of a garden shed on the Isle of Man!
In a BIG boat? A pair of these 'strapped' would provide plenty of power.
It weighs 620kg. That's HEAVY for such a genset.
It's pretty quiet, though, and will run on pretty much anything.

A 12.5Kv diesel weighs 770 lbs. (1700kg) and the 7.5Kv generator in our boat runs two AC units and a 10 gal water heater quite well.Unfortunately it's not too hard to find good used diesel generators that have outlived the boats they were in, making a micro turbine a tough sell.

I think you got the math backwards?
770kg is about 1700lb, right?
Any way you slice it, that's a heavy piece of gear. And not for the 'small boat'.
I don't know what size boat can be fit with such a genset. Maybe something with a real 'engine room'?
I guess I was thinking in the 'MegaYacht' Category? Something over maybe 80 or 90 feet with all the fixtures such a boat would have. 12kw might not be enough?
Onan and Kohler are the first names that pop into my head.
Too much is never enough
Uh.. 770 lbs is only 350 kg, the new diesels might be all aluminum, and don't need a gear set. 620kg (1366 lbs) is very heavy for 12Kw output.
Agreed.
Not for 'small' or 'light' boats.
Larger yachts with CREW.
My impression from 1st post was you SWAPPED LB or KG. 770kg is right at 1700lb within rounding error.
Too much is never enough
