We had an elderly kitty (Griswold) who, among other health problems, suffered the typical kidney issues late(r) in his life.
For FOUR YEARS :-) every night, after dinner, Mrs. H would hold him on the kitchen table, and I'd stick a needle in the scruff of his neck and pump 150 mL of lactated Ringer's solution (buffered saline) into him subcutaneously to flush him out.
He was a very patient patient, and endured it calmly, day after day -- after we finished, he headed quickly to his litter box.
We were his kidneys. For four years.
He lived to a ripe old age (estimated to have been 20 when he died). A good cat.
Unlike the current crop ;-)
Good luck with yours!
all the best,
mrh

Good for you. A lot of people would've just had him put down. We've been through the same thing, the sub-Q hydration that is. First with our cat Tralfaz and then again some twenty years later with our furry friend Bob.
Astro the Dog's original name on The Jetsons :-)
This was when I was a kid.
Said cat, that grew into a huge calico (female, as one would expect), utimately ended up being named Sherman, after the tank -- because she was tank-like in many respects.
all the best,

Yes, we named our cat after a dog. I was surprised to discover later that the name goes back before the Jetsons. I was really surprised one day to see a reference to the name in the 1956 Warner Bros. cartoon mentioned in the link below, but had zero idea it went back even farther than that. We still miss that cat, the wife and me. He was the smartest/best cat I ever met. He could open drawers and doors almost as though he had hands instead of paws, although round knobs were a real challenge for him.
