Most of us remember General Haig uttering those words in error after President Reagan was shot. I have a true story tied to that and my DC area location.
Working at the DC areas best 12V shop and only OEM radio repair less than a year after he said that none other than Mrs Haig comes in the shop and I get to wait on her.
She says who she is and makes sure to let us know her time is quite limited. She is dressed very well. We bring the vehicle in the shop within 10 minutes or so of her arrival for a radio INOP complaint.
After it was in less than ten minutes she is again demanding answers acting very impatient. Turns out to be a fuse and after I came back from the shop with the diagnosis I said "I am in control". I was worried of backlash but did it anyway. She missed it or didn't care.
Truth is stranger than fiction
"If at first you don't succeed, keep on sucking till you do suck seed" - Curly Howard 1936
A lot of generals' wives try to wear their husbands' rank. I had a bitch of a Major's wife try (repeat, try) to do the same thing at my kid's school once.
Apparently, you've had a chip on your shoulder about something for a very long time.
Anyway, wealth and "power" have nothing to do with being an asshole. I know assholes who are wealthy and who are poor. I also know people who are wonderful, kind people who are wealthy and who are poor.
Take the assholes in Ferguson, Missouri, or Baltimore, Maryland, or any other place where they were destroying other peoples' property just because they felt like it. Or the guy who threw a brick during Mardi Gras years ago and hit Al "He's The King" Hirt in the mouth, ending Al's playing career. Or the guy who shot and killed a young woman who was just out having a nice day with her Dad in San Francisco.
Some wealthy people are assholes, but I submit that there are many many more average people who are.
Who gave millions of dollars to help build the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas? Yes, that's right, a wealthy billionaire named H. Ross Perot. He gave it on the condition that it wouldn't be named after him. I met him once, totally by accident, and you could not ask for a nicer guy.
Who gave the money to build the Oshkosh High School auditorium in Oshkosh, Wisconsin? For literally decades, it was just the Oshkosh High School Auditorium. Only after Roberta Kimball died, was it revealed that she had funded it, and it was renamed the Alberta Kimball Civic Auditorium.
"The poor" are poor because most do not wish nor want to do their part and contribute to Society (like criminals). Not difficult to figure out...
I guess that's it. It's so simple. The poor people are keeping the economy down. F**king dead beats.
the so-called poor and homeless cost us taxpayers an obscene amount of money every year. Welfare/hand-outs were never designed to become a lifestyle?
Well meant at the time of Reagan's shooting because the VP was absent, flying back from somewhere. The appearance in all the chaos and anxiety was that of a void in which no one was present to lead. So Haig, as Secretary of State, actually was in charge (and present), so he stepped up to the press conference microphone and said those words to calm people down.
It was unfortunate because Haig was already seen as being vastly ambitious and overbearing. The press then blasted him pretty hard as intemperate and injudicious with a greedy power grabbing personality.
He was, but by doing the right thing, he drove that nail home.
There is never an excuse for pure unadulterated greed or grandiosity
Most folks get rich because:
They inherited it (where is greed there?)
They owned a really good business (I call that talent)
They invented something (again, talent)
Stock market lucky picks, like Microsoft IPO, or Apple at $12/share before the 14/1 (total) splits. (Just smart stock picking. again no greed)
The bastards selling mortgage securities, knowing they are crap, just to make money.
The guy who sabotages your work because he is jealous you got a promotion.
The guy who murders you (at random) because you have a much better car than he does.
All those small people who think they should have more' because, Hell everybody on TV does!
Too many people think the rich should give it away. Ridiculous.
However the rich do fund endless charity projects, and the arts, hospitals, public works. I thank the rich for every show I watch on PBS. Their names are listed.
If they handed all the money to poor people, it would be spent in a week, on total crap, and drugs/booze and stupid things. (look at 90% of lotto winners, end up broke and bankrupt in three years.)
PS I an not rich, I live on a small pension and SS retirement funds.
So true- 3+4=5
as Johnny Carson (who ironcially was also rich and powerful) would often advise.
Needless to say this was always met with the studio audience's overwhelming approval.
*Just avoid using direct eye contact : )
why did the General say "I am in control?"
