I was given a Windows 8 era HP laptop that the woman spilled water on in December.I got around to taking it apart and saw the damage, cleaned the boards and turned out the HDD and keyboard needed replacing. Most keyboard keys worked but f10 did not so I could not repair the corruted BIOS.Speaking of BIOS the Windows product key is now embedded and encrypted in the BIOS. Ah the good old days when it was on a sticker on the case. HP wouldn't tell me the key but would sell me a recovery disk for $52. Really? The computer is licensed to use Windows 8 and they should give the info free. I wasted plenty of HP's and Microsofts and mine resolving this.
Well I found freeware that decrypted the BIOS and got the key and voila! I'm typing on it now. So the keyboard was $14, HDD $29, missing CR2032 CMOS battery free. I doubled the memory to 8 gigs for $18 too.
I need these little wins in life. A good friend just gave me a pristine late 7 era laptop with a lit keyboard that needs a new microprocessor. $14 shipped. We'll see on this one it got stripped of its HDD and memory so will need a total investment near $80. I always wanted a lit keyboard laptop.

what's the freeware program?
I paid much more money than a laptop was worth for Windows TAX. Would like to get that.
Software that is free, costs nothing.

ok you're being secretive with the "program" name.
I'll just smash my laptop in the backyard then :)
BTW... I went to solid state HD on my new desktop computer. Pretty darn fast boot ups.

Yes I love SS drives but didn't feel this 2013 era Athlon Dual 1.3 merited it. As one that knew this PC before she spilled water on it the addition of the extra 4 gigs of memory relly helps. It is running 8 with a shell to look and act like 7 and it goes from off, not hibernating, to log on screen in about 12 seconds. It used to take around a minute.

Congratulations! When working on laptops I usually count success by how many screws I have leftover after putting things back together. And a back-lit keyboard is a very nice feature. It's been a must have feature in the last three laptops I've purchased.
LOL on the leftovers, that's happened before. The first 20 I did I would always watch the YT on disassembly but I don't anymore unless I get stuck. A clear sign of laziness....
