I'm with you 100%.
I can't stand TV (except football and a very few other sporting events),
as I find it insulting. I'm one hell of a lot smarter than the average
TV viewer, at whom most programs are aimed. Even football is becoming
hard to watch, esp. NFL, what with all the commercials (yes, I know the
commercials pay for the "free" content).
I don't watch many movies - the last one I saw in a theatre was Hell or
High Water, and it was very good. Of all movies ever made, there might
be 200 to 300 really worth watching.
I'd rather read.
Follow Ups:
I'm a bit the opposite.
I'd be more than happy to get a rebate/reduction for every sports related channel I could delete.
If I could get any REAL science, history, documentary, or education related channels? I'd pay a premium for those.
As to Netflix? I find more value in what they offer than in cable programming, and I am NOT able to get any "OTA" programming where I live.
I'm centered enough in the French Broad Valley that my coat hanger get's everything. My kids are 10 minutes farther West and 500 feet higher and get nothing, like you. Other than that, and all the fucking Floridians, there's nowhere I'd rather live.
Sadly? I'll probably be pulling up stakes & heading towards FL in another 5 years or so.
Hey, at least I'll get decent broadcast TV! :)
p.s.: I'd be envious & despise you for the relative amount of culture & nightlife in Asheville, vs Spruce Pine. :P
