We re-tiled our downstairs last year and had an option of an upgraded grout. I don't remember what it was called. The installers said it was harder to work with and it cost a little more, but it still looks pristine. It's not white. It basically matches the tan tile.
We had the same people do our master bath about 5 years ago. That grout also is beige, but in places it is darker and a bitch to get lighter. I'm told that the problem is that grout is pour out. Once crap gets into it, its into it and not easy to get out. The new grout in the rest of the house is not porous.

Sounds like you're talking about epoxy grout. Works great, but most installers dislike using it because it has a very limited working time so if the installer mixes more than he can use he's wasted it and has to start a new batch. Installers who are not very familiar with it usually bad-mouth the stuff because a lot of them are too set in their ways to learn how to work with epoxy grout. Just move on to a different craftsman who's not afraid to learn something new.
If anyone is considering it, the best thing to do would be to employ an installer who has lots of experience with the stuff and doesn't mind using it. You will probably pay a premium, but it'll be worth it.
Cheers,

After some research, I find that we probably do have epoxy grout in our main living area. The newer stuff has a longer working time and water clean up. The reason I didn't think it was epoxy was that I watched them clean the tiles with water. Anyway, it stays looking new and is well worth the extra cost. Looks new after two years, whereas my bath is discolored.
What we have is not epoxy grout. It's something else. Epoxy grout has been available for many years. The newer improved grouts are also harder to work with per our installers, but they did it well. We paid extra, but it was well worth it to have it still looking new. We are thinking about having our master bath redone (justthe grout). The beige grout is much darker in some areas and my wife is bothered by it and the fact that I can't really fix it.
They have a little hand tool that scrapes some of the grout out. It's a lot of work. Then they can re-grout with the new improved stuff. I'm sure if you google grout, you will find info on the newer options.

Just wanted to share something that actually worked, as opposed to all the crap at Home Depot that doesn't.
