I have an old pair of the original Laurel kits from Welborne I never finished ; got sidetracked with 2A3s, and then para feed BH 45 amps when I got the Avantgarde Duos, and never finished the 300B amps. Now I'm running Zu Soul Superfly speakers, and it's time to run some 300B amps and put those great FS-030s to work! After all the bad stuff I've read about with Ron and Welborne, I'm not too hooked on finishing the amps with the Laurel circuits. Suggestions? Thanks! Great forum by the way.

Just a thought, say what you will about Welborne, the Laural was a nice amp. Well regarded in it's day. You might want to think of building it if you've got the parts. You can always change it later. The ethics of the designer doesn't erase the quality of the amp.
unfortunately though, Ron's behavior has tarnished my ability to really enjoy using his products. So I sold my Reveille preamp, as good as it was. And now I'm going to end up with something much better; the UltraVerve from Kara Chaffee at DeHaviland. That's unless I decide to build a 76 or 26 preamp..... I may do both....I really appreciate the human side of this tube and audio thing, especially the DIY side of it, and love communicating with all the great people I've talked with. On these forums, and sometimes on the phone. Spent 15 minutes on the phone the other night with Sean at Zu talking about speakers, amps, Denon DL103s, cables. Great guy.
Trust is really important to me.

That's probably what I'll do. I always had good experiences dealing with Ron, and appreciate what he did to further the SET thing back then.
I love the fact that there are so many great variations on how to run the 300B!

I built an amp for a friend using the E180F driving a 300B using the FS-030 output transformer and Magnequest power transformer. He is thrilled with the amp which runs the 300B very conservatively. It has just over 2A3 power levels but he doesn't need the power and the 300B will last a long time. I built the same amp for myself first using a Welborne DRD 300B kit as a foundation and a 2A3 output tube. It has Electra-Print power and output transformers.
I am in Barnstable and not using the amp at the moment since I am in love with a PP 6P14P inspired by the "El Cheapo" circuit. Contact me if you like.
I love the EL-84, need to get some 6P14Ps. One of my next projects is probably going to be the SA-100 clone. I have a pair of nice Fisher original SA-100s; one VG condition, the other with good trannies etc but lots of surface corrosion on the underside of the chassis. Might use the transformers from that one. Or, I might rebuild both Fishers and sell one to raise $$ for diy projects, and do the SA-100 clone with the Heathkit transformers from an AA-100.
I also want to build a nice SE EL84 amp too at some point.

By the way, the speakers I'm running are 16 ohm. And, I have the Vaic tubes I bought with the kits.

I've built MANY 300B amps. This is my favorite (you can use an EL84 too). For lots more 300b insight, search the SET asylum for Thorsten's name.
Thanks, I have followed Thorsten's posts in various places for years.

this amp by the famous designer Nori Komuro in Japan is one of the best I have heard
I subbed a 6DN7 for the 6J5 6V6 combo and it sounds wonderful

Thanks Michael. I've read nothing but raves for Nori Komuro's amps, but sadly missed hearing any in my couple of visits to Fi, Don Garber's shop in nyc.
I'm trying to make sense of the schematic voltage numbers, and how to sub in a 6dn7.
Steve T
the 6DN7 section one subs for the 6J5 and the section two subs for the triode connected 6V6. the specs are so close that no changes are needed in the circuit. the reason for the strange looking voltages is the use of two power supplies so you can get rid of the coupling caps. all tubes in this amp are directly connected. if you cannot find the same UTC power transformer you can use two separate units with similar specs.
