Hi Joe:Long time... hope all is well for you! Drop me a line at acrosound@aol.com so I can catch up a bit with you.
Re: TL-404's. I do have in stock some TL-404 XL (larger core than std).
Please provide your buyer with hook up instructions... or if your the buyer do a search on this forum for TL-404 Hookup.
And yes... they are a challenging design to wind... many reversed windings, multiple paralleled primaries, multiple interleaves btwn pri and sec windings, multiple wire guages, different amounts of insulation in coil (to balance the winding capacitances)... good stuff. And all designed nearly a decade before I was born.
Bandwidth from 20 hz to >100Khz (+/- 1db) as tested by an end user in Italy. Check out http://magnequest.blogspot.com/ for more detailed test specs.

Mike,
I hope you had a great vacation.
You've got me wondering about those TL-404XLs. Can you provide a link to more info on those? Are they C-core?
Thanks,
Matt
Hello Matt:The impedances and taps are the same as the "regular" TL-404. The only difference is that the XL has 33% larger core.
All of the current 404's are built on c-cores. The originals were built on special (and long ago obsolete) Westinghouse pattern EI stamped lams.

Mike,
So instead of a 2W rating it's 2.6W? What is the application that benefits from that little boost?
Matt
A hair over 3.5 watts - power goes as cross section area squared.

Joe,
I know we are talking about real power now. But given Mike's conservatism the 404 is probably good for real world 3Ws anyway, and the XL is probably good for 4Ws.
I'm building an amp for a college daughter and it's headphones over speakers any day, so one autoformer to rule the world has me thinking. Not sure that I want a big bottle 2A3 out in the open but an E55L spud is nice and stout. I was just curious about the XL demand, and yes I'm american so I know more is always better.
Matt
Three watts! Holy moly! Don't blow anything up!! Wear earplugs!
