I saw him perform at Blues Alley with this horn or one very much like it. Instrument is at the African American Museum.

. . . that he had a normal instrument originally. Someone sat on it when he left it on a chair between sets, and bent it. He liked the way it projected, and subsequently had others built that way.
Saw him at Blues Alley a handful of times with different groups in his last decade and a half. Much glad I did.

Interesting. Apparently that trumpet is called the "Pudgy." It looks very little like Diz's usual axe and more like a cornet.
If you google "Dizzy Gillespie trumpet" and then click the Images button, you'll see a photo of him playing the "Pudgy" model as well as several other "bent" trumpets that are much longer. So "Pudgy" wasn't his usual, for sure, but he did play one.
