Got a bit of a shock when 'Trane counted it in.....
Follow Ups:
is that Trane has been studying and practicing everything prior to the sessions,
and the other players sight reading/soloing sometimes just isn't up to what Trane is doing, and how could they be?
Of course Miles wanted spontaneity, and even fired George Coleman for practicing the tunes in his hotel room.
Yikes!
Tommy did his best on "Giant Steps" but you can tell he was struggling a bit. But then, that piece has challenged more than one musician.
Well Stevie Wonder played it, but who's really got the chops in this?
This guy would be my choice. But then, I love his playing so much that I may well be biased.
poor Tommy, having that sprung on him out of nowhere!
Trane coulda sent over a lead sheet a week or 2 earlier....
Or not.
I think he kind of made up for it on "Cousin Mary". Tommy was an excellent musician but Coltrane was in a different league. As great as it was I don't think he ever recorded "Giant Steps" again. I suspect by the time that record was released he had already moved on, following something only he could hear. An amazing man.
Very good pastiches. I was amazed.
Amazing indeed. All great but I kept going back to Red Garland. Wow. Thanks for this. Loved it.
